whilst talking about odi opening batsman i'd like to give a shout out to marcus trescothick.

unfortunate to play for a nation that didn't take limited overs cricket serious enough or play it enough. bloke was a legit gun in odi cricket. went under the radar cause of how utter ****e england were.

4,335 @ 37 in 123 matches.
sr 85
12 centuries.
Nick Knight deserves a mention too. Was elite against ATG fast bowlers in ODIs.

I think Astle should really be in the top 5 for NZ. His MOTM record in wins is right up there with the best.

I used to open with Turner & Astle in my NZ ATG XI, but Guptill is a must these days. I still think Turner, Crowe, KW & Taylor were/are better. Many would select Astle above Turner, but for me it's not just Turner's amazing record (average 47 SR 68 in the 70s/early 80s), but the fact he revolutionaised ODI batting in those early days, with chip shots in the air between in and outfielders. Astle is the next cab off the rank though.

I'd pick Turner in the NZ AT XI too. But I'd back Astle to do better than Guptill against other ATG sides

My NZ AT ODI XI

Turner
Astle
KW
Crowe (c)
Twose
Cairns
McCullum +
Hadlee
Vettori
Bond
Chatfield

Chatfileld is a good call, but I think MIlls and Boult just pip him. Close to mine anyway of;

Turner
Guptill
Williamson
Crowe
Taylor
McCullum+
Cairns
Vettori
Hadlee
Mills
Bond

Honestly think that bowling attack is up there with most other ATG ODI sides too.

One advantage of your Astle selection is your could get a good 5-7 overs out of him.

Kohli has to be at 3 imo. India have a plethora of fifth bowling options in Yuvi, Sehwag, Tendulkar, and Raina (if chosen). Could just go with 4 specialist bowlers, including Kapil. Something like:

Sachin
Rohit
Kohli
Yuvi
Dhoni
Sehwag
Raina
Kapil
Jadeja
Agarkar/Srinath
Zaheer

Part of the problem with selecting an ATG Indian XI is that four of our best ODI bats, Ganguly , Sehwag , Gambhir and Rohit are competing for the same spot and they are just not as good in other places. You can't give them #3 either cos #Kohli.

Sachin, Sehwag, Yuvi, Ganguly are all good part timers, so probably Rohit can come in for Ashwin but then Sehwag will go too low.

Tendy - anchors your innings
Lara - averages 46 opening
Viv - lol
Kohli - like a Swiss army knife, kohli can steady the ship or accelerate as needed
Abdv - I choose ABDV over MS; AB averages in the 50s in both subcon and outside subcon
Gilchrist - Gilchrist or Sanga?
Andre Russell - I need a roidhead pro-fielder and all-rounder
Warne - Prefer him to Murali and Saqlain
Andy Roberts - statistically, one of the best ODI bowlers
Garner - statistically, one of the best ODI bowlers
Wasim - death to middle stump!

I meant to say, "I need a skilled, hard-hitting all rounder who has breached drug-testing laws, possibly due to substance abuse, irreverent qualities I admire, as contemporary drug laws inhibit the ubermenschian aspirations of homo sapians."

And homo sapiens who don't wish to take PEDs should be content with not being able to compete, eh?

Jeez India's ATG bowling is weak isn't it? I mean Zaheer, Srinath, Ashwin, Kapil and Jadaja really your best 5 ever? I don't often talk NZ up, but compare that to Hadlee, Bond, Vettori, Boult/Chatfield, Mills.
