Lawry is endearing to listen to but fmd he makes no insightful or even interesting remarks whatsoever.
Indeed. I love having Bill in the com box but only because his is a voice from the past.......not because he is much of a decent pundit.

...in that they're both left-arm orthodox spinners? Vettori was a lot more side-on.
yeah, not a lot of turn, rely a lot on batsmen playing for spin and getting lbw etc.

In all seriousness I find it interesting that Vettori averaged well over 30 in FC cricket, but SOK averages low-20s, because I'm sure most people would naturally think that Vettori was better. Obviously Vettori bowled a lot in Tests against very good players which could account for a lot of that difference in average.

Haven't taken much notice, but who is at 1st slip in place of Renshaw?

Ashwin isn't even close. He's far too reliant on conditions.

Don't know about Rabada, give him a bit longer
Well, Hazlewood didn't make much impact in England or SL either, though his raw numbers look OK in those series.

Haze was a lot better in Sri Lanka than Ashwin is outside of the WI/subcontinent.

Him in England on the other hand....those conditions should've suited him perfectly, the 3rd and 4th Tests were amongst the worst he's bowled.

Hazlewood was only slightly less effective there than in Australia, not quite the same as the difference between Ashwin in helpful conditions vs normal conditions, which was enormous

So McGrath and Hazlewood's stats at the same age/time period are pretty much identical. Interesting.

Yeah, but it's relatively easier for fast bowlers to maintain relatively decent individual stats when their team is getting hammered. Just like it's easier for spinners to pile up a huge number of 5-ers.

Nice.

Though tbf I don't feel particularly scared when cricketers play their shots in this circumstance.

Hazlewood was pretty average in SL, especially in the context of how well Starc did and it was a pretty weak SL batting lineup. Didn't look like taking a wicket in latter stages of series and was rarely used as a result.

That was such awful shot selection. A left-armer coming round the wicket looking for reverse back into you and you're trying a booming cover drive? Really bad

Thats exactly how pacers can protect their stats when its not going well. As the lead spinner, the captain has no choice but to give you a large chunk of the overs.

Re: Hazlewood/McGrath comparisons, McGrath's greatness was that he took wickets in all countries and all conditions. Hazlewood has generally been excellent in Oz conditions but needs to improve in Asia from his last tour there. I'd be surprised if he didn't do better in Rngkand next tour than he did in 2015.
