I don't mind Latham being there, I just think our best all weather line up has Kane Williamson opening in ODI with Guptill, Latham could perform the "come in with an early wicket" role, or rotate with a hitter like Munro at 3 when it suits.

The more I think about it, the more I'd like to see Rutherford there or thereabouts in the T20 set-up. He's a natural T20 player, provides that left/right combo with Guppy up top & allows KW to better utilize overs 7-14 after the PP.

Eye surgery hasn't hindered Taylor on his return so far.

Good signs, I don't think either game was televised, but it will be amazing news for us if his T20 hitting is even close to what it was circa 2008-12 in his glory slog-sweep days.

Anyway given he's not in the squad, and nor is Rutherford who I think was a bit stiff not to get the T20 recall... I'd probably go with

* Big reservations about Ferguson, but if he can hit that yorker he's managed to hit once out of about 150 deliveries, he could be useful.

* Between Neesham and De Grand, you get the feeling De Grand will be more devastating with the bat against ordinary opposition, but Neesham for the likes of Aust/SA attacks. Sadly I still see both as liabilities with the ball against decent opposition.

de Grandhomme is barely a better bowler than Munro in T20 cricket really. If he's picked it should be as a specialist bat.

I'm fine with him playing as a specialist bat but it'll be carnage if he's expected to bowl in anything other than emergency.

Would also like KW to consider using himself more with the ball, to help plug that potentially weak 5th bowler 4 overs of De Grand/Neesham/Munro & Anderson (when he's bowling again).

Even in NZ domestic cricket he goes at nearly 10rpo and often plays without bowling at all. Admittedly I haven't seen him bowl this SuperSmash season and his figures seem a bit better than normal, and he has improved his bowling more generally as well, but I'd still just be considering him a batsman at this stage.

With respect, Bangers T20 side in our conditions is probably slightly below the domestic T20 level that CDG faces, but you're straw-manning if you think I'm trying to argue he should be anywhere near bowling against any decent opposition, I'm def not.

With that said, Neesham & Anderson's white-ball bowling still concerns me greatly too. Mitch McClenaghan should be included in any serious T20 side we trot out. Can travel in the 50 over format, but his bowling is good for 8s at T20 level, which is good when you're bowling upfront and at the death.

Great stuff. any other batsman & you wouldn't be so excited seeing slog-sweeps over mid wicket time and time again... but seeing that from Taylor is glorious, because you'd swear that was footage from 5 or so years ago.

Make that 6 years. Was selected for Ireland in 2011 for a pre-World Cup tour to India, but ICC would only relax the stand-down period from 4 years to 3 years 10 months for Ed Joyce, and not Marshall, so Marshall had to be removed from the squad.

Then Marshall wasn't selected for Ireland later in 2011 due to funding issues between England, Ireland and Gloucestershire.

Good enough for Ireland squad ≠ international quality player. Just means he's one of the best available to a minnow who has international status.

I thought he looked magnificent all around the wicket in the last game I saw, but it could be only at NZ domestic level.

I'm actually quite excited about the game tonight. Hopefully we bat first and Bruce gets some time in the middle. This will be my first time actually seeing him play.

Nice six over mid-wicket here against England at 1.10 in a T20 at the Oval in 2013.
