Australian Test Selection 2016/2017

If our batting pans out things could get interesting if Pattinson is fit and in form. While conditions won't favour pace he produced a good spell last time and Starc did well in Sri Lanka. Hazlewood might not be effective but if those two are threatening all he needs to do is keep things tight and wait for an error. O'Keefe as the spinner (can't be worse than Lyon IMO) and we might be able to nab a test.

Will be interesting to see if/how we fit S Marsh into the side for the Indian tour. I reckon he's a must for those conditions and would be tempted to drop Khawaja.

Warner
Renshaw
S Marsh
Smith
Handscomb
Cartwright/Maxwell (maybe even Head but we've got enough left handers for Ashwin already)
Nevill +
O'Keefe
Starc
Pattinson (if fit) Bird/Lyon otherwise
Hazlewood
Look I understand the thinking to dropping Uzi because he isn't great against spin but we don't have bourses for courses batting selection policy. With the year he has just had why don't we try some faith that he can work out a solution to spin.

Really hope that they arent tempted to pick Cummins or Patto unless they play, and survive, a few shield matches.

They are obviously good enough but you'd have hoped that the lesson has been learned by now (feint hope)

They are still interested in Maxwell? I feel the reason Cartwright has been drafted in for these two tests shows the selectors are drifting towards the 3rd seamer being the all rounder than one of the spinners, right?
Starc, Haze and two spinners with Hilton providing the 5th option and Smitteh/Gravey trying to buy a wicket if things are going bad looks like the forward thinking to me, and I reckon we'll get a trial of it in Sydney.

MMarsh should play over Cartwright in India imo, one of the few guys to actually look like he knew how to bat in Sri Lanka and the UAE, and he's actually a legit bowling option

Aussie selectors: we will pick and stick... Ohhh an allrounder we haven't tried yet.

That's called a squirrel moment.

Yeah, indeed. MMarsh's subcontinental batting has been massively underrated because career average; in the context of a series where three other guys averaged above 20 (Shaun Marsh, Steve Smith, David Warner), his 163 @ 27.16, scored at a decent rate, was actually quite good compared to the rest of the side. Like, he isn't a brilliant batsman against spin by any means, and he's not a Test batsman at all at this stage, but he had a plan over there and was generally able to execute it.

Cartwright may be very similar in that respect tbh. Not a 'proper batsman' against spin, but a good enough block-bash merchant to piece together handy contributions. Not ideal, but I'd take it over a top order bat failing six innings out of six because they're still trying to bat properly but just can't do it.

The way Smith captains spinners is a big concern for India for me. Playing 2 spinners and 2 pacers is asking for trouble when they don't give Smith what he expects and he puts the pacers back on after 4 overs. Smith is likely to grind the pacers into the Indian dust. We should just play with 3 seamers plus Sok. Even then you still probably want a bat who can throw some semi decent overs down like Maxwell.

Playing 2 specialist spinners has virtually never worked for Australia

Pick the 4 best bowlers (which will definitely be 3 pacemen) plus an all-rounder

Also try to minimize the number of left handers in the batting lineup

England tried both of those things!!

Honestly I don't think it matters who we send, we're unlikely to win anything more than a dead rubber (if we're lucky).

So Australia are scheduled to play their 3rd and final T20I against Sri Lanka on 22nd Feb at home, while the first test against India begins on 23rd Feb.

Yep, when I first heard this I was surprised but I don't think it is that big a problem since the Test players aren't playing in the Bash anyway.

I guess the thing that I am most curious about is who we will pick us backups in the Test squad, cause it will be slightly annoying having someone like Maxwell as the 15th man in India where he could potentially be playing in the T20 game which will obviously be missing some star attractions.

We will still be able to field a quality team, even excluding anyone who has played test cricket in the last 12 months.

1. Finch
2. Dunk
3. Head
4. Bailey
5. Maxwell
6. Lynn
7. Faulkner
8. Cummins
9. Zampa
10. Tye
11. Boland

Yea coming to think of it there are just 2-3 players who might potentially play in these two formats for Australia so it won't be a big blow for either the T20 side or test side.

Wondering if the scheduling was done intentionally though which doesn't sound good if it was.

Actually would be pleased to see us just field a Best of the BB team. It will be close enough to our best T20 side anyway.
