Yeah if he'd kept better he'd be putting pressure on Saha when he was fit again, but his batting just just isn't worth the keeping trade-off given how well India's spinners bat. His versatility might have earned him a squad place next time India tour though.

It might be outside of the subcontinent though.

Yeah, the thing about both PP and DK is that they give amazing versatility and flexibility to the side. DK is a bit better as keeper (used to be a lot better, dunno how he fell off but he did, but was always a natural keeper) and PP is a bit better as a batsman (struggles less against seam and swing but just as strong off the backfoot as DK and has added more shots since his last international series).. That way we are a bit lucky.
