IF we can get to 320... them somehow keep India under 400... then there's a chance that our top order (6-11) can put on a few 50 partnerships and the tail (1-5) might also chip in with a few runs and we could leave India chasing 200 on a 4th day turning pitch.

Well we have had a bad day and it could have been so much worse if the Indian fielders hadn't dropped so many chances. Guess we have to take the small crumb of comfort that we may still get over 300 and that may prove a half decent total later in the match but once again our batting has let us down dismally.

Going to need to bowl very well tomorrow to keep ourselves in the game.

I fear we are going to miss Stuart Broad badly

Stokes is fine, hell, even Woakes with Stokes is fine - but you've got a bunch of non specialists parading in the Top 7 as batting all rounders and that's never a good thing for test cricket.
Nah. We've picked goodness knows how many specialist batsmen since Strauss/ Trott/ Bell/ KP retired/ lost form/ were booted out. Nearly all were an unmitigated disaster. But yeh sure go ahead and blame the guys that have actually contributed.

Woakes will give you 25 overs and concede only 50 runs and our guys will probably not attack Anderson, at least at first. Almost all our runs are going to come from Stokes', Batty's and Rashid's bowling. We will be 200/3 by the end of tomorrow at best. It will look like an even contest when the third day begins.

Nah - we'll catch better than India - you'll be all out by the close tomorrow, for about 175

Excellent last session there for India. I like how they were disciplined in terms of keeping the runs down. Hope we can wrap them up in the first 5-6 overs tomorrow.

Whatever it takes!!!
When you see a wicket like that before drinks on day 1 it makes you glad you won the toss.
Need to keep them under 300 IMO. Will be tough to handle any more than that with all the variable bounce.
The pitch isn't as bad as everyone is making it out to be, having said that it does depend on how fast it deteriorates. Definitely need to keep them under 300 after this kind of start, and considering how terrible we have been in the field.
Ofcourse Paarthiv gets assigned as keeper/opener right after Jake and I talk about why keeper/openers don't work in Test cricket. Of course.

Bit of uneven bounce on this wicket, and where it seams it spins, so this could be a low scoring game all around. Stokes and Bairstow batting quite well. Not sure what a good first innings score here is tbh. 350 maybe?

This has quietly turned into a good recovery here. 87/4 to 188/5 is pretty damn good. Not convinced this pitch is a road either.

Yep.. People forget the part the moisture on the surface can play with these 9:30 AM starts during the winter, esp. in places up north. Areas of the pitch where the moisture has remained more than others and hence you get uneven soft bounce off it. This was a road (going by what seems to be defined as a turner here, its fair to call this a road) and a great toss to win. England batsmen have only themselves to blame. I liked Kohli's captaincy for the most part. But he needs to find a way to get Ash also be the dry spell bowler that he seems to go to Jaddu for. Away from home, we might well play 4 seamers in certain conditions with Ashwin being the sole specialist spinner at 6 and he needs to learn to bowl dry. People don't seem to understand how difficult it can be for spinners coming in from FC cricket in India to be the containing bowlers. Most of them would never ever play that role for their FC teams. Its why someone like Mishra struggles when batsmen attack him and you see it happening with a lot of our bowlers. Jayant is doing it ok because he has had Mishra as his captain and main spinner.

nah no edge and the batsman was well back

Just fumbled a regulation take.

tbf he's looked alright since i've been watching. And the stumping was nice.

Nah.. was a catch and a stumping, both regulation and he messed up both. **** needs to make a 100 to make it up. As I said, given how poor the catching of this Indian side is, we need our keeper to be a realy good one who can take all his chances first and foremost.

Jayant Yadav's definitely outbowled Ashwin today.
I don't think so at all. Watching the whole day's play, he seemed to bowl more wicket taking balls/opportunities than any spinner. Jayant was also pretty expensive in his first spell without really attacking the batsman or even bowling any attacking lines or lengths. He has a bouncy action and seems to get the ball through quicker at the batsmen than they think. Thinking about this more, there is more Harbhajan in his action and bowling style than Ashwin. Hopefully he will keep doing well and can be a solid 5th bowler/6th batsman for us in such conditions. But I have seen Ash get couple of 5 fers bowling worse than this. Think he will keep getting better this series.

Tomorrow probably best day for batting. Need to somehow get through the first session

There will always be something during the first session and especially the first hour here, that too with the new ball. Given that, it might be a good thing for us that England were not bowled out today. But I think today was the best day for batting. The pitch will get slower and lower and run making esp. will be a lot tougher even in the second innings on this track. England also have the kind of bowlers who can exploit the up and down a bit but slow nature of the surface. Stokes and Woakes will be real threats if we can see of Anderson with the new ball. Plus all of them should get it reversing by the 30th over.

4 drop catches today. This must be karma for me criticizing Pakistan's fielding earlier today
