Australian Test Selection 2016/2017

Red

The normal awards that everyone else has
Maddinson and Wade aside, it actually feels like we've picked a better team. I feel like Ferguson should've been given one more, and Nevill didn't deserve dropping. Renshaw and Handscomb at least give us a view toward the future. And we've picked Bird, which means we're picking the best 3 quicks available in my opinion. O'Keefe might've played if not for injury here, but Lyon probably should at least have this test based on his history.

I want Maddinson and Wade to prove me wrong, and I hope they do. I'm excited for this test because I like a debutant and I haven't seen any of Renshaw, and very little of Handscomb.

On Renshaw...has he jumped the queue a bit? I thought Bancroft was next in line.

A spinner can be important in these Day Night games depending on how the batsman is picking up the seam/ball. All the more reason to have hoped that SOK was fit for this one really, as he's more likely to be attacking the front pad.

Bancroft playing a 2nd XI game at the moment, hasn't had a great start to the year I hear.

I like the fact that they've stuck with Lyon, if they had have decided that O'Keefe was the best option then far enough, but I don't like the idea of then hopping to who was thought of as the third best option prior to all this, just because you feel that someone "needs to be dropped".

We can talk about this and that when it comes to Maddinson and how Lehmann/G.Chappell played a part and 'intent' and all that.

But this is close to being Smitteh's brain child in getting 'his' team that is for sure.

gotta say, got mixed emotions about this ponting as coach/selector chat. he himself may be good, but he seems to skew too much to the "gotta find coaching/selector jobs for these ex australian legends" and it's like well there's more to it than that. but hey if he's chairman of selectors i guess that's ok.

Yeah, he's obviously had to have some say in this. To what extent though - he had never met Renshaw, let alone watch him bat, for example, so it's hardly like he's been picking the blokes he rates the most.

A bit of a movement to have him in there "anywhere, anyhow" at the moment - probably not good news.

He is the perfect guy to be an assistant coach on rotation with a few others.

Oh definitely. Was just talking more the Mad dog selection.

Think there is no denying the fact that Renshaw was picked because of his amazing start to FC cricket , it almost shouts out 'player with a test future' plus the fact he scored pressure runs at 20 batting with the batsman who opened the last test for Australia and the fact he has come through the pipe-line and scored 94 v SA 'A' in the winter. If I was an Australian fan I think I would be quite excited by his selection.

I see his old man supports Nottingham Forest FC and good on him :D

"We’ve obviously made a lot of changes, and some young guys have come into the squad," Smith said today. "This series has been disappointing the way it’s gone for us. "I’m actually really excited about the young guys coming into the group and what they bring.

I've almost felt a little shift in the last couple of days in attitude and energy from what the new guys have brought in."
His comments definitely make me think he influenced some of the selection. The last line seems like a dig at the older guys in the team who got dropped. Which would have to be Voges and Nevill since Ferg was only in for 1 match.

Could be why Lyon is always in the gun.

Is there a cultural disconnect between Boof and his Gen Y players ?
