I can't believe I ate the whole thing
Yeah we performed better than we did in South Africa but still lots of concerns. Periods where the bowlers served up trash, and then collapsing with the batting after a lot of hard work:
The negatives:
Guptill. Goodbye sweet prince.
Taylor was a both unlucky and diabolical
Watling was slightly disappointing with the bat too
Kane's captaincy was found wanting at times
The mixed:
Sodhi bowled well at times, and trash at others (so standard Sodhi service)
Wagner, after some first innings toil and reward, kinda disappeared across the rest of the match (no entertaining runs)

The positives:
Ronchi, wag
Santner is maturing well
Kane can play spin, even if he gets undone but future ATGs.
Latham battled well, and not going on the triple figures should be forgiven considering 70-80 seemed par 'good score' for all concerned.
Boult seems to be back.

I was most disappointed with the way we bowled in the 3rd innings, just didn't keep the pressure on when there was plenty in the wicket, and yeah Kane was just a tiny bit defensive, although the bowlers weren't giving him much choice with runs at a premium.

Both Ashwin and Jadeja got 40s in first innings. Even.
Both took wickets in 1st innings, but note for Jadeja 3 of 5 were tail enders and 3 of 5 were marginal / incorrect lbws. Ashwin got the key wickets of the top scorers. Advantage Ashwin.
Jadeja got downhill skier runs in 2nd innings when India already had a match winning lead. Ashwin didn't get to bat against tired NZ spinners. Advantage Jadeja.

So they give Jadeja MOM because he smashed a quick 50 from #7 against tired NZ spinners when India had a 333 run lead?

Until Jadeja knocked over the tail the game was in the balance. I was still hopeful that NZ would get a 50 run 1st innings lead. In one over the game was over.

Excellent win, that. Pleased that NZ at least didnt completely fold and made our pacers chip in with a few overs.
+ Pujara, Vijay WAGs
+ Ashwin, Jadeja WAGs. Immense with both ball and bat. Ashwin still has phases where he goes from deadly to randomly looking toothless for a spell. ( Inb4 hb loses his ****). Bowled a few poor overs at the beginning of the day but his finger was clearly bothering him so it's a nitpick.
+ Shami, Yadav chipping in when needed. Should be bowled slightly more, not too much more.
- Rahane and Kohli still look woeful at times vs spin. Kohli looked a total spud in the first innings, as did Rahane in the second, but at least he didn't do anything too stupid. Kohli was both technically poor and played dumb shots.
- Get Pujara out of short leg ffs.
- Didn't hurt us in the end, but our batting in the 3rd innings post lunch was pretty ****ing poor.
Bleh: Rohit getting runs in the second innings. Atrocious dismissal in the first dig but seemingly he's saved his spot with a typical downhill skiing, pressure free knock. You can defend him as much as you want since he was in a lose-lose situation but he put himself in that spot by failing when it mattered again. Still looked less spuddish than Kohli.

Jadejas runs were useless because the match was pretty much won already by that point.
What about Ashwin's 2nd innings wickets then?

Nah, there's no such thing as downhill skiing wickets (apart from declaration slogging ones). You still need to take wickets to win, runs after a point are inconsequential.

Yeah Jadeja's second innings runs weren't that important because the match was already not lost by that point. It still could have been drawn, so wickets from there on were still valuable.
