Needless to say,City would still be in the title race right now if not for the poor run of form they had recently.

City dint look convincing in 13-14 either when they won the title.Pellegrini has a poor record against the big sides either way but they consistently used to beat the scrub teams which played a big hand in them winning the league that yr.

Arsenal on the other hand,as soon as they build some momentum by going on a run beating good teams, they suddenly capitulate by losing to some random mid-table team. That 4-0 against Southampton this yr pretty much summed up Arsenal of the last 7-8 yrs.
Yeah ok, but this is all just stating the obvious.

No it didn't, Arsenal's problem has always been not showing up against the top sides when it matters. We haven't often struggled to put away dross, certainly not to the extent we have this season.

Not struggled to put away the dross, but there have definitely been issues in terms of dispatching teams on paper they should beat. E.g. Stoke, West Brom etc...

Arsenal have had one or the other problem every season either way. :p

In 13-14,they used to beat fodder consistently but get beat by top sides by tennis scorelines. This year, they've fared well against big teams but lose to scrubs when no-one expects them to.

I'd say City have the best starting XI but not the best squad.
Yeah, I think it's fairly close. Citeh don't have too many players that aren't either past their best, injury prone or just not especially good. KDB and Hart really, possibly Sterling. They haven't managed to ease the burden on Aguero, Kompany and Toure.

BARNES OUT
That run of poor results after the Pep announcement also happens to loosely coincide with KDB getting injured and missing like 3 months, just ftr.

I think Pelle coming out and saying the announcement ruined their season is a load of **** tbh. They basically had no choice but to announce it, it would've gotten out anyway (but with reasonable uncertainty, which would've been just as bad an influence on the dressing room anyway IMO) and the way the situation was working out with Bayern, Pep's team would've no doubt wanted it set in stone and announced so he didn't have to deal with a thousand questions a week about where he was going next season.

When it comes down to it, Pellegrini has done a pretty **** job so far this season, is lucky to still be in the Champions League (Juventus handed us top spot on a platter) and is putting this spin out there because he wants a good job next year. Can't blame him for that, but it's the reality of the situation that everyone is ignoring because he's a nice bloke and people want another thing to be outraged about and blame the dirty foreign owners for.

RE: Chelsea next season. Don't take top 4 as a given. Remember Utd had a side that had won the title 2 years prior, a bad season where we'd missed out on Europe, and had brought in a new manager with a reputation for success (remember when LVG had a reputation?). Despite heavy investment, we still laboured to 4th.

The thing Chelsea do have going for them is that Hiddink has got the current squad going again, and the early announcement of Conte might have made one or two players think staying another year might not be too bad, but if they lose a couple of key player in the summer they might find the road back is a bit longer than they thought.

The whole "Pep distracted us" is 100% pure bollocks. Lame excuse for neither the manager nor the players being good enough.

There needs to be a word for players tacitly accepting the narrative that their crapness is due to lack of effort because it implies that they have more potential for improvement than they really do. Balotelling maybe?

lol yeah, and when they get to the CL semi finals you hear all this stuff about how they're doing it for Pellegrini before he leaves etc. How can it be both and hinderance to their league results and a motivation for their CL performances to such extreme extents? All bollocks imo.

The one in bad shape atm is Arsenal.

The British core project is failing.Oezil and Sanchez, the two stars of the club openly expressing dissatisfaction and perhaps hinting at moves to other big clubs. And they have the same manager whose threshold seems to be finishing 3rd or 4th at this point.

Its all about ambition.Chelsea unlike Arsenal have shown they would go the extra mile if required.
This is not the case btw. As recently as this week it's been reported they'll sign new deals for as little as £160k a week.

Well, definitely was in 12/13 and 13/14, but started shifting in 14/15 and has been the complete opposite this season. It really is amazing how Arsenal can have a completely unique season they've never had before and still finish in the same position with the same points.

The "good for half a season" trend has held pretty well, although it's never clear which half it'll be.

Definitely seems like that time of year where we all get our violins out for those poor long suffering gooners

As the guy with a Özil shirt standing outside a £470m stadium said on Arsenal Fan TV on Sunday, we don't deserve this.

Man, Dortmund fans are all class. From how they usually are, to the tribute they paid to the 96 and the singing... to this:

Arsenal Fan TV is terrible. Really hate it. Mainly because it they seem to specialise in finding the most objectionable and incoherent people imaginable to interview. Like the person you mention, by the sounds of things.

I'd go along with that, squad has loads of holes in it though and they need to spend a huge amount this summer to fill them properly. Guess they will but Pep can't afford too many blunders.

Don't think they have anywhere near as much quality as the other 2 clubs he has been manager at, a good test for him. Think he will pass it though.
