There's been a curious phenomenon whereby as more and more money has been pumped into the Premier League, the big sides have gotten worse.I don't think it's embarrassing because Leicester aren't good. They would completely deserve the title on their own merit if they did it. But when a club's management argues for years that an upper-mid table finish counts as success because it's impossible to compete with the richest clubs, this makes them look bad. No getting around that.
Liverpool have bought very badly as well. There's been a curious phenomenon whereby as more and more money has been pumped into the Premier League, the big sides have gotten worse.
I think part of it can be explained by the likes of West Ham being able to attract players like Payet wage wise, who would probably have been out of their league 3 or 4 years ago, thus narrowing the gap but it's bizarre how much money the bigger clubs have spunked away on absolute shite.
It's almost as if the big (and midtable) Premier League clubs think that having more money gives them a free pass in terms of having to do sensible recruitment, youth development and innovative coaching. They seem to think "why do all that boring stuff when we can just poach the next good promising talent from Sevilla/Leverkusen/Roma by offering to double their salary". Doesn't really work that way as recent results in Europe have shown. There's been a curious phenomenon whereby as more and more money has been pumped into the Premier League, the big sides have gotten worse.
