Only recently come across a lot of his thoughts on football, but seems he was a great football mind as well as a player. Sad day.

Somewhat change in tone, but somewhat perplexed about the general sympathy about the sentence handed down to Adam Johnson, not as if he was seduced by a girl in a club who looked older than she was, he groomed her ffs.

He admitted he put her age aside as focused on the fact it was another girl to get with. She in herself might be no angel, but ****ing hell Johnson is the adult in this scenario and he knew the age of consent.

I've not seen much sympathy to be honest, more that he got off lightly and should be banged away for life.

I think one point I have seen across the web is that a female teacher had *** with a fifteen year old student and got community service and a fine, Johnson didn't go past fingers and gets six years. However, life is never so simple and there are presumably all manner of facts and points as to why the two are different.

I do find the righteous condemnation a little unsettling though but I'm not going to go into detail on a forum, even one like this where the discussion would be reasonable. He'll be out in three years but seems likely he'll struggle to ever play again.

Make sure you get a revised edition if such a thing exists, IIRC the book originally came out not long after Euro 2000. Still a great read mind.

I can't remember if Winner also wrote Those Feet which explores the history behind English football's psyche. It's a good read as well, not as good as Brilliant Orange though.

I've always had a soft spot for the Dutch since the Advocaat era at Rangers but I reckon that book's been a huge influence on how I see football.

Surely you're all too busy watching this, Erm, football match that I'm at to discuss such matters

I can't remember the last time a goal made me as happy as Adam Mekki's winner. Come on you whites.

Also, if anyone else has read it, is there an equivalent to Brilliant Orange about German football?
There is one called Tor which looks kind of similar but it is not particularly recent. Unlikely to be in the same class as Brilliant Orange anyway, might be my second favourite football book after A Season with Verona.

Read a season with Verona about 6 weeks ago, absolutely top drawer

He's basically responsible for Barcelona.

You should give Brilliant Orange a read if you get a chance.
Sounds like good advice.

I pondered on the 'Obituaries' thread that Cruyff belongs in the football version of Mount Rushmore, as discussed in the cricketing section.
The more I think about it, there simply isn't anyone who's had nearly as much influence on the modern game.

Jean-Marc Bosman.

Although in terms of the actual game I would agree.
