Stags' George Worker pushes for Black Caps call-up in provincial one day final | Stuff.co.nz

George Worker sent the Black Caps selectors a message during the domestic one day final on Saturday. In fact, he sent them 159 messages.
Worker said he was feeling in top form at the moment.

"I am feeling pretty comfortable," he said. "It is feeling nice to be doing good at all three formats. That was one area I wanted to work on: try and be consistent in all areas."

But he was not sure what else he could do to convince the selectors he deserves a call-up back into the Black Caps.
"I don't know, it is a tough one really," he said. "Selection is out of my control and I am not trying to think about it too much.

"All I can control is trying to put numbers on the board and try and bash down the door."

Worker scored 431 runs in eight matches of the domestic one-day competition at an average of 53.87.

george worker has quietly been one of the best one day batsmen in the domestic game for several years now. i don't think he's odi opener material but i'd give him a go at #5 or #6 if the chance was there. he did ok in his odi and T20 run last year.

it's only this season he's cemented his FC spot though.

I'm not adverse to Worker taking over from Baz opening in both the LO formats.

Although I'd be partial to Latham opening in ODIs as I think he's now secure enough as a test player and some ODI experience may improve his test play ( gapping it, and working singles).

Don't want Kane opening in ODIs, our middle order is now too weak.

Can't believe he wasn't given a chance in the T20's. Would of been a very handy addition to the World Cup squad, especially with his spin.

that's a very different post to the ones you've made defending him in years gone by
I thought CD were nuts for allowing him to head down south to Canterbury. He hadn't made the most of his chances at that point but he was always going to turn it around, which is what he has done. But his game, and especially technique will not translate at the next level.

cheers for clarifying. i think he deserves a crack to prove us wrong and that he will have some innings of substance as a reserve, but yeah im skeptical of players who blossom in short form domestic cricket but not FC. tbf since his move into the middle order he's scoring regular FC runs this season.

Ford Trophy was too drawn out from a scheduling POV.

Now we will be lucky to get a Plunket Shield round in before first Aussie test. Blackcaps not involved in ODIs will probably be in camp and miss that round anyway.

2 games a week in Ford Trophy was too slow. They used to go a game every second day during holiday period back in the old days.

All it need was 4 rounds in 8 days between Dec 27 and Jan 2. And we would free up an extra week.

Now we lose a tiny little bit of advantage we could have had if anyone at NZC cared enough to prepare as best as possible. Good luck to Matt Henry and co if he takes the new ball for the first time in a test in 2 weeks with such a poor prep.

This used to fill me with rage. Eg Tim McIntish preparing for tests by playing for Parnell. Now, it's just a resigned sigh.

What do you folks make of the Firebirds side just announced to play Otago? Fraser Colson making a come back. Scott Borthwick getting a go very first season in Wellington and so is Matt Bacon. Again barring Fraser, where are the locals? The local club cricketers not good enough?

As in one-Test wonder Scott Borthwick? No kidding. What a massive fall from grace to play an Ashes series then have to turn out for ****ing Wellington.

where are the locals?
Well the locals (or the local pitches) are permitting Lance Dry to bowl a match-defining ten overs for fourteen runs in a 50-over final, last time I checked in on them. Until they break the shackles and dominate Dry and Karaitiana, they haven't really got much of a case.

Feel free to send Edgar my tirelessly compiled A-Z video, if you're a concerned Wellington supporter.

Tell him to move fast to snap up the good prospects before ND muscles in.

Craig Cachopa not exactly assisting the case for giving the younger FTBs from up north another go though tbh.
