"JP Duminy, Rilee Rossouw and Hardus Viljoen have been released to join their respective franchise teams for the next round of Sunfoil Series matches starting on January 7th.
The squad for the remaining two Tests will be announced at the conclusion of the current match in Cape Town."

Mmmm...

Means Duminy has been dropped, and reading between the lines they're going to call up a specialist opener - if they're getting rid of Rossouw.
Dropping Hardus Viljoen from the squad is incredibly disappointing. I presume one of Steyn or Philander is expected to be fit for the 3rd test if they're doing so; however, I'd actually be more inclined to drop Morris (regardless of the fact that he can bat). You don't really bounce back from a bowling performance like his so soon.

Possible but don't SA will want to weaken the batting atm.

Think SA will play 4 seamers at joburg provided its a quick pitch thought.
Yeah, I'm actually surprised they released Duminy. Duminy at 7, followed by four pacers would have seemed to be a goer.

I actually don't think they'll play four seamers though, purely because they've already released Hardus Viljoen back to franchise cricket.

If Bavuma fails and Faf goes big, would South Africa be tempted to play Vern at number seven next test thus five bowlers in the team?
Not at all. Vern isn't close to being a number 7 batsman, and our batting has been pretty weak (excluding this innings, which has been on a road).

The frailty shown by van Zyl opening the batsman, Bavuma, and even Amla before this match doesn't give enough confidence to give up a batting spot.

Yeah, but both Steyn and Philander should be available for the 4th test, so it really doesn't amount to anything. The better bowler, Viljoen, gets to play more cricket, so it's a good decision.

Duminy being dropped is big. Who comes in if Rossouw has been let go as well?

I mean, that's the 4th test. What about the next test? Do we keep this bowling attack? I really don't think Morris has looked up to it.

Stephen Cook will likely come in, and we will drop Stiaan down the order.

They released them to play a 4 day game between the second and third test. They are still available to play the third test. Those who are released are just allowed to get game time.

People seem to be confusing being released to play franchise cricket between tests to being totally dropped from the squad.

They're almost certainly not going to play any of those players though. It's basically an admission that they won't be selected for the test team, so they can play for their franchises without raising concerns around fatigue.

I think both will be fit, tbh - which will make Morris getting dropped from the squad either way. Remember this is not a squad announcement, more just who out of the reserves are getting cut.

Yup. I'd be shocked if any make the initial squad. The release of our reserve middle-order batsman, imho, indicates a move towards a specialist opener for the next game, with Van Zyl as reserve.

Aim to declare at tea, irrespective of the lead / deficit. We got to back ourselves to be able to bat out two sessions tomorrow.

Amla's passed the total number of runs he's scored in his last 12 international innings.

Not out of the question that this test turns the series imo. I know Furball poo poo'd a suggestion by someone earlier that this could happen but I reckon its a distinct possibility

Yeah this is really boring. Saffers run rate is pretty poor really, just letting Root bowl at them at 415-3.
