Root has got a serious conversion problem. The last four times he's past 50 he's got out caught by slip or keeper in the 70s or 80s. It's just not good enough for a player of his class, it's so frustrating to watch him bat so well after being dropped by AB only for him to edge an innocuous delivery.
It's difficult to make a serious case that Root is better than Smith or Williamson if he keeps throwing away potential tons.

Not really. Had Root and Compton both been caught England would have been 50odd for 4 and only been 140ish ahead. Not really sure you could've said SA would have been ahead at that point, but the same is true of England. Not that it really matters.
