That looks a lot better, still a bowling option light though for me.
There is no all arounder good enough in first class cricket. So besides asking mister kallis very very nicely to come and play test cricket again they will have to stick with this till they find someone good enough to bat in the top 7 and bowl.

Not sure about Faf getting the axe right now. Yes he is horribly out of sorts but would want him getting more time for at least the full series

He is averaging 18 for the year. How much does he deserve? Van zyl also 18 and duminy 10, that's where the problem lies.

When Steyn/Morkel/Philander are fit could SA look to do a sort of England thing and pick two batting all rounders (one of whom is a spinner) to give them those 3 front liners and two decent options? Elgar is a reasonable arm turner but he isn't a wicket taker imo. Are there any players who fit that description?

Stokes needs to start scoring runs. I'm not worried about his bowling, he is a very skillful and versatile 4th seamer but he needs to be averaging 38-42 with the bat (which @ his strike rate of 70s will mean plenty of destructive innings).
If he doesn't you could pick 4 seamers and move Moeen to 6.

Bairstow is the likeliest to make it as a top order bat imo. He won't be the long term keeper though. Buttler will be back at some point as they're desparate to have him in the team.

Probably right but Buttler needed dropping and will hopefully come back better for it. May be a year before he plays a test again if Bairstow takes his chance but nobody would moan if Bairstow became a top 6 player and Buttler came back in with the gloves. We just want a good side regardless of who the 11 players on the field are.

Bairstow has never shown he has the game to prosper as a genuine top 6 bat in test cricket - far too many gaps in his technique for me

Buttler is a much better keeper and way more potential with the bat too.

Agree that the issue we have is too many 7s and no genuine 6s in the squad. Stokes needs to be averaging at least 35 if he's going to bat 6

How does Buttler have more potential with the bat? He has just as big (if not bigger) technical flaws and a much worse FC record. I am bored of the euphemism 'more potential with the bat' when people actually mean 'might hit more sixes'.

surely having 3 no.7s from 6-8 is fine.

Who cares if you're no. 6 isn't quite could enough, at least you have an awesome no. 8.

Australia have a no. 8 batting at 6 right now . . .

It works in our favour sometimes. But I think if we could have a 45+ average man there it would once in a while stop a collapse rather than having 3 dashers.

You've got like 2-3 45+ averaging batsmen in the whole of England, forget about having one at 6 for now lol

Probably a fair point about the technical issues - I just think Buttler has a ridiculous amount of natural ability that we need to make use of

Yeah 45+ is asking quite a lot of a number 6. Especially when we don't have a number 2, 3 or 5 that average that

Based on previous experiences, cue Cook waiting for a lead of 750+ before declaring with 20 overs left in the game.

Interesting to think about possible declarations actually. One has to consider the South African blocking tactics. 400 in five sessions might make sense*

*I'm aware this is not actually going to happen and probably a bad idea.

Would say we already have enough tbh. Think we'll put the hammer down tomorrow morning with Root and Taylor at the crease and Stokes, Bairstow, Moeen, Broad & Woakes to come
