Anyway, this test pissed me off a bit because of the way NZ constantly flirted with getting ahead only to fail. But it was a great, compelling game. It started at 3:30am for me, which is about as bad as it gets, but I still saw all bar one session of the test, which says a lot.

Makes me very optimistic about the future of test cricket. Not that I was particularly pessimistic about it before hand, but it's still great to see.
Our team is a nearly team... we don't have a world class player who can grab opportunities like this and nail them home.

Just a few passages of really poor cricket, plus the umpiring shocker have really cost us this test.
Don't do that. Things even themselves out, NZ have had plenty of luck as well.

It was only like 4 hours ago that David Warner was dismissed off a no-ball that wasn't called.

Well it's not the lack of a world class player. More the fact there's 3/4 average to very average players in the side.

It's not just a world class player, we need a player who loves playing under pressure and can see the team home with the ball or bat. I never felt we were in the game when defending 180 because we don't have a bowler who can pick up 3-4 wickets quickly. Our bowlers all rely on bowling to a plan and setting up batsmen, they can't produce spell consisting of jaffas which can knock a side over.

Except that wasn't a no ball, and the concept of things evening out is totally bogus - context means everything, one wrong decision occurring at one point in the game does not cancel out another wrong decision at a different point in the game.

Anyway, the whole process for that decision was obviously stuffed up, with the wrong replay being shown for the lbw and the strong suspicion that the snicko was also replaying the wrong delivery. The most disappointing thing though was that after that decision we bowled an hour of ****e, and that has cost us hugely.

Re the Lyon decision, he was out. The on-field umpire made the wrong decision, and the DRS process couldn't fix it. Llong did nothing wrong; he followed the process by the book and the process wasn't good enough. DRS catches the extreme majority of the awful on-field decisions. This is one occurrence when it didn't.

That being said, NZ needed to take that wicket. What came after that let-off was not particularly good from an NZ perspective.

Moreover, their second innings batting was not up to standard. Guptill needs to learn to leave on length and Latham chased a wide one, which exposed KW-RossTheBoss-McBaz to a rampaging Hazlewood under lights when they needed to be protected. Hazlewood was immense, full credit to his bowling.

Amazing effort by NZ to almost defend it though. Fantastic game of Test cricket, and a great advertisement for the new Day/Night format. But inb4 someone says that three day result pitches are killing Test cricket.

Boult.

Would have been nice if Southee had produced something in support.

Boult went OK. You would've got damn close with a reliable spinner.

McCullum has been completely off his meds when its come to his use of Craig.
McCullum continues to back players even when they've obviously jumped the shark.
The one consistent thing about Craig over the 3 matches is that he consistently bowled short wide rubbish. The decision to bowl Craig against Starc in the first innings was beyond dumb, smacked of trying to give him a wicket to make his figures look a bit better. The guy was on one leg hopping around against pace, Craig gave him stuff he could get under and smoke out of the ground. 30 odd crucial runs gifted to the Aussies and it made a huge difference. Second innings, same story. Even the few overs Craig bowled were too many. Santner got a chance and took a wicket straight away.
It was the same with Bruce Martin. In the 3rd test of home series against England, just bowled him and bowled and he couldn't make a dent, finally threw it to Kane in the dying stages and he picked up 3 and ran out of time to win the test.

Matches that only go for three days are a massive problem, which is explains the growing popularity of matches that only go for half a d... oh nevermind.
