Smith values his wicket when he needs to which wasn't the case in the first 3 innings of this series.

Any way Smith is averaging in the high 50s so its much easier for him to get it up there. Same with r00t

Root doesn't seem to have the appetite for big scores like Smith, Warner, Kohli etc, and has a terrible conversion rate.

Kohli has no appetite. I'll be honest, as far as Test cricket goes, I think Kohli is playing way below his caliber. The wonderful things he does in ODI cricket are yet to be successfully translated into Test cricket.

8 tons in 35 games isn't bad

As for Virat, yeah he is definitely a rung below other 3 when it comes to cashing in (averages less than 45 right) and given his age wont make as many runs or hundreds as the others but he got that intimidation factor working for him. I think opponents fear Virat more than They fear Smith,Root etc

I think something like four of Root's first five tons were 150+. Getting out in the 80s and low 100s has only been a thing for 6 months or so. He's probably trying to be too positive, which can kind of happen with form.

Virat has faced must better bowling attacks though. Definitely needs one solid season of high run scoring like Root and Smith had.

I believe his problem is in the mind. He averages in the 60s and 70s in the second and fourth innings respectively. He is focussed when he has a target to chase and struggles when he is batting blind. Get that fixed and he'll be alright. Maybe convince himslef to always bat like there's 300 runs to chase.

Nah Smith just keeps going and going and Root has the handy combo of being both a potential ATG and coming in at #5 when the ball is no longer new, so you have to bowl to this run machine with an old ball. I was not optimistic as a fan whenever he came in tbh.

Root's innings in Auckland not nong after he debuted had me converted. I think he made about 80 odd? But looked in a different class to the other English batsman. Plays it real late the way Williamson does.

The weird thing about Root is that he hadn't really done much in county cricket when he debuted. He was identified as a future talent but I thought selecting him for the India tour was too early and certainly didn't think he'd become an integral player in all formats as quickly as he did. His first real dominance in county cricket came at the start of the 2013 season, after he'd spent the winter with England, where he suddenly looked a God amongst men.

He's one player the selectors/coaching team get a massive tick for.

yeah I remember thinking Root absolutely sucked when he first played Australia. Slow scoring and weak wristed, just didn't respect him at all. Crazy how good he ha become

Checking the scorecard, he only made 45 and 29, but that 45 was off 176 balls and his defense looked impregnable till he was the last man out. I could tell straight away that he was quality.

yep. thought it was flukey as hell. wrote it off as an isolated incident. just something about the way he batted, I dunno

edit - i just checked his stats from that series... other than the 180 and another score of 60, his top was 30 from the other 8 innings. averaged 37. hardly ATG material

I didn't think Kane would ever look quite this good. I though he'd have a record similar to Crowe, not be a guy who looks so.... Completely comfortable.

Thought Smith was a spud.

Root I saw as being decent maybe about that Crowe/imagined Kane level. Jury is out still if he is better than that or not.
