I reckon it's better to divide Kane's career up into three phases

The "Too soon" phase: October 2010 - October 2012
884 runs at 31.57 (2 centuries)

The "He has arrived" phase: November 2012 - March 2014
1080 runs at 41.53

The "A god walks among us" phase: June 2014 onwards
1632 runs at 85.89 (with 7 centuries from 23 innings)
thought I was reading about Steve Smith for a moment there...

In Australia, there were two times during Clarke's captaincy when an opposition team recorded two centuries in an innings. It's already happened three times under TPC. So keep in that mind when your hear some guy talk about how defensive TPC is or whatever, or how it'd never would have happened under Clarkeh. Clarke never really had to deal with 500 v 500, and then trying to set a third innings declaration. It was typically 500-600 v 300-400.

What the ****?

Swear his average was below 30 around the time of Taylor's Test too.

Not sure what to make of this match. Kane scored an easy peasy ton and the game probably contained the battle of the year (allow me some potential hyperbole) between Taylor and Starc. I don't remember what happened first but the ball to draw his edge when he was seeing it like a beach ball well over a hundred was ridiculous and the 160kph yorker Ross the Boss casually blocked was awesome. I was like "ooohhhhh yeah he's got this easy" after the block then "160? ****ing hell this is intense".

Warner and Khawaja were just unfair. Warner in particular just looks unstoppable and has the technique to succeed in Adelaide under lights too.

Smith scored probably the most relaxed and cruisy ton I've ever seen as well.

But then the flatness of the pitch for four days made what could have been a good game pretty damn boring for a lot of it.

I'm pleased for Starc and Southee that they finally got some reward for their efforts (to think the latter was in doubt of playing right until the start of day one). Criminal that neither walked away from the game with a cheap 5fer considering some of their spells, but then every bowler in this game was guilty of bowling poor areas at times and the crime was exacerbated by the unforgiving deck and the world class batsmen.

Frothing for some unplayable swing next test but considering what a fizzler this series has been so far thanks to New Zealand being **** in the first and the pitch and bowling being **** in the second we'll probably get the game called off on day three after the batsmen go on strike because they can't see the ball or something.

From memory it went below 30 during that Sri Lanka series before he and Roscoe cleaned house.

Been amazing how he and Smith have gone from hackfrauds to men of genius.

There may yet be some hope for Suresh Raina

Smith the more astonishing imo. KW you always knew was going to be great. Smith just came out of nowhere. It wasn't long ago he was a bowler. A reinvention on the order of Mark Richardson.

This post was great up until this point.

He was never a bowler. When he made his Test debut he was averaging about 40 with the bat and 45 with the ball in First Class cricket. The prevailing opinion on CW was that the selectors should be looking to replace North with him at six. When he did get a go as a batsman he didn't look great so the improvement is noteable as compared to Williamson who everyone just thought needed more time, but the whole "started his career as a bowler" thing is basically a myth that just won't go away. He may have been selected as an allrounder by CA early on (he batted eight but Watson and even North were more trusted with the ball so he was kind of in a nothing role), and he has focussed on his batting more over time, but he was never "a bowler" despite that.

Smith was only viewed as "a bowler" by the media, and that was because of all the focus on the various spin options that were tried after Warne retired.

After the first test one of the NZ fans had referred to the UAE 2014 series which had a crushing defeat in the first test by NZ, a fighting draw and then of course the amazing third test.
At that time I had thought it was overly optimistic. Now I am extremely pleased to see that it is a very realistic scenario now.

Ross and Kane - just bloody awesome..To come into bat at 2 wickets down staring at 550 runs is just a totally different proposition. And NZ bowlers bowled better in the second innings which shows that once they have a 600 total at the back of their mind, that can considerably lift some spirits.

Hope McCullum finally wins the toss at Adelaide. Should be a cracking test match now

The pink ball just adds a different dimension to the match because, to be quite frank, no one knows what the **** will happen.

Will the swing be massive?
Can the bowlers control it?
Can the batsman deal with it?

Smith didn't come out of nowhere. Was blatantly obvious he was something special.
Yeah he played a few ODIs in England IIRC and though he didn't make that many runs, he played some absurd shots, one-handed ramps over point and the like. Clearly had hand-eye that was on another level.

Those ODIs are sort of what I based my post on. Didn't notice anything special about his hand-eye then (although I do now obvs).
