Even if he turns out to be twice as good as his Old Man (at the moment he's turned out not to be as 'good') he'll still be crap

Swamp was a hack who had no shots and averaged in the 30s

Save the nepotism for Ponting's son, McGrath's son, SWaugh's son, or Gilly's son

Not for mini Swamps (puddles)

Have we not established Shaun Marsh is a failure in test cricket?

Should have been Klinger, heck I'd take Maxwell before bloody Marsh.

Would be worthy of a thread of its own, blokes from different countries who for inexplicable reason keep getting picked.

Likewise, the recall of batsman Shaun Marsh represents yet another chance for the undeniably talented left-hander whose 15-Test career spanning more than four years has featured some remarkable highs as well as a number of abject lows. The most recent of the troughs came in England earlier this year when the 32-year-old was brought into the team for the fourth Ashes Test at Trent Bridge in order to bolster a brittle top-order.

But he managed scores of 0 and 2 as Australia was bowled out for 60 in their first innings and humiliated by England’s bowlers, falling to defeat in just over two days. He was subsequently dropped for the final Test at The Oval.

Even though fellow Western Australia batsman Michael Klinger has made more runs in the current Shield season, over the past 12 months and in the previous two years and also boasts a higher first-class career average (39.71) than Marsh (38.50), the son of former Australia opener Geoff Marsh has received the selectors’ nod. "Shaun was unlucky to miss out on the squad for the first two Tests (against NZ) and since then has scored consistently in Sheffield Shield, so we believe he deserves this opportunity," Rod Marsh said, with the left-hander having produced scores of 15, 1, 2, 92, 64 and 33 over his past six Shield innings.

Klinger, 35, has posted scores of 202no, 50no, 4, 16, 70 and 23 over the same period.
Bad luck for having the wrong dad Klinger.

So of the options:

a. Young batsman debut.
b. Proven Shield run scorer
c. Allrounder
d. Marsh

The selectors chose D because it's their default setting.

I don't have a huge issue with Marsh tbh. It's not exactly an inspiring selection but you'd think whoever gets picked would just get dropped for Khawaja anyway given his and Voges' runs already this summer.

The best thing about Shaun Marsh is that he deselects himself almost as quickly as others select him.

He's just as likely to fail against **** opposition at home, as good opposition away. He also has the ability to fail in any batting position.

He'll fail spectacularly enough to get dropped right after scoring a hundred. Or he'll just injure himself.

He's not the guy who comes to your party and mildly annoys people all night. No, he ****s in the middle of the floor 15minutes in, put his hand up apologetically, and then leaves (possibly injuring himself on the way out).

He's not a bad batsman imo, just poor against the moving ball and doesn't belong up the order. No idea why he opens or bats 3. Has he ever gone 4-5 for long periods in Shield cricket?

That's why the selection isn't awful. You can pick him and be pretty sure he won't be around in 6 months, regardless, which is kind of what you want in this situation.

The problem with having different rules for someone is that it's obviously easier for him to make a case for retention. In the 2 tests before Uzi is fit what does he need to do to displace Voges or Burns? You feel anyone else would need to be an instant world beater but Darsh. I dunno maybe scoring more over those 4 innings is enough. Sure I don't like him but I don't like the special rules even more. If he was blowing Shield attacks out of the water but failing at Tests I could see why you keep going back but he doesn't.

Let's at least bat him in the right spot this time. Nevill at 5 before both Marshes since that's where the tail starts.

I wish we could bet on players to make scores of less than 10 i'd put my house on Marsh

srsly only there because of his last name which is ridic as Geoff was forgettable anyway

Guys, it is pointless trying to find justification for SMarsh's selection where there is none

Better off having a minute's silence for Brad Hodge, Stuart Law, Martin Love, James Faulkner and Jamie Siddons whose COMBINED test caps total is less than the Oz selectors' love child

****ing disgrace

Exactly. He doesn't overstay his welcome. Craps out, then leaves.

His selections used to piss me off, now it's more "meh, he'll be gone soon"
