All the bowlers have weird peaks for some reason. I don't think MJ bowled two balls at 156km/h, nor Hazelwood one up at that velocity.

Yeah it's crazy that they had a dodgy speed gun 40 years ago, then used a legit one for 40 years, and now have gone back to the dodgy one. Those quicks in the stolen generation got duped.

Speed guns weren't routinely used in matches until fairly recently (eg 90s). When McGrath was first measured routinely, people were surprised he wasn't faster. He was hard to hit and batsmen thought he was much faster than he was.

Because if you bowl it downwards it isn't going forwards as fast - i.e. the less the ball has to move up/down the less overall distance it's got to go along the 22 yards forwards, so dead straight yorkers don't have to go as fast overall to appear faster to the batsman.

That's assuming that they measure lateral velocity only, though. Maybe the yorker thing is an urban myth.

Ok I don't think not having Khawaja is going to be that big a deal. The guy just came in. The best batsman in the side is due for a big knock any time now, not to forget Warner.

Yeah it's a big deal. The side is one bat down and the rest of the top-6 have to adjust their play knowing that. Smith's only 'due' in a fan sense, he still has to actually score the runs and Warner would be fatigued after batting a day and a bit and then spending almost two days in their field on top of all the batting he did only last week.

Let me explain how the speed radar works.

The radar gun's transmitter sends out radar waves at a fixed (coherent) frequency. Any objects in the waves path reflect those waves back to the radar gun where they are detected by the gun's receiver. The frequency of the reflected waves will be the same as the transmitted frequency for static objects, lower for objects moving away from the gun and higher for objects moving towards the gun. This is called the doppler effect. By measuring the highest frequency shift the gun detects it can calculate the highest speed of any object moving towards the gun.

Now, the important thing to remember is that the seed measured is relative to the gun. So an object travelling at right angles to the gun will register no speed (it's distance to the gun isn't changing), but an object travelling directly at the gun will register it's true speed. Therefore the higher the angle of travel between the object and the gun, the less accurate the speed rating.

Amazing from Williamson. In recent years in Australia we've seen Kohli, Vaughan and Amla have excellent series where they never looked like getting out, I feel as though Williamson is surpassing them all this series.

Yeah you've done well to remember that correctly seeing as though Kohli was just last year. Not sure why you'd think I was naming the 3 bats in order of when we've seen them..
