The game is still pretty fast in league, probably faster than it's ever been. For all the perceived gripes, the onus is still on the officials to get the decisions right, but technology has been incorporated into the process. At least they haven't thrown a hospital pass to the players and asked them to pick and choose which tries to challenge or not.

I don't want to turn this into a rugby league thread but the 20s comp has used a captains challenge system for years now and there's many who want it in the NRL.

there are some issues with DRS but it being the responsibility of the players is most definitely not one of them

Not trying to sound wise after the event, but I went into this test with distinct pessimism after the mauling that was Brisbane. In my mind there was no way we'd were going to take 20 wickets here if we managed 8 in Brisbane knowing the WACA deck is generally true. As soon as I saw we lost the toss, I immediately thought 3-400 at stumps.

I was hoping the Gabba would be a write off in that:
It was a road
We were undercooked (so were Australia to be fair)
Southee got a bit injured
We didn't bat exceedingly horribly
We could regroup and see what went wrong and comeback

But as soon as I saw we lost the toss and Smith elected to bat I wanted to throw the computer through the workshop window.

Indian fans on CW are naturally pessimistic, but the death-riding of the Australian side—which had just lost at Hobart, remember—was something to behold. Robelinda predicted we'd get whitewashed IIRC.

Hobart was over a year before that. You'd whitewashed India and SL at home, won in WI and been competitive with SA after that, and India had just lost to England at home.

To an extent I don't feel sorry for teams that lose reviews on Umpire's Call. The system is there to overturn an absolute howler, and is set up to be able to overturn absolute howlers and absolute howlers alone.

If captains decide to review a marginal call on the off chance of picking up a free wicket, that's on them. They know about the margins before they make that strange arm gesture.

The problem with this argument is that it humans have limited capacity to identify these errors given the speed the events take place. Especially given the players who have to decide whether to review don't have the same vantage point as the umpire. So it seems slightly academic to me to say it's only there for "absolute howlers", which are of course obvious to the armchair viewer but aren't necessarily going to be clear cut standing on the field of play.

I've missed large parts of the day. But the commentators seemed to indicate that Bracewell was the best bowler. Pre-series, I'd have laughed if someone said Bracewell would outbowl Boult and Southee.

Yeah he's been clearly the best bowler thus far. Bowled a much better length than the other three.

They were similar IMO. Both had pessimistic home sides who had lost to England in their last major home series, both had away sides that were kind of hopefully optimistic, and most neutrals suggested the home side would win a tight series, then it became obvious after the 2nd test they'd lose 4-0.

Where did this thing about "absolute howlers" even come from?
How can McCullum standing at an angle to what the umpire has seen determine what constitutes an absolute howler or not? He's concentrating on fielding, the umpire is concentrating on adjudicating.

I'd rather the technology was applied to get correct decisions.
