Southee caught behind: nothing on hotspot, big noise at moment ball passes bat and the end of the bat hits the pitch.
Watling lbw: ball looks going over live, legitimate decision to review.
McCullum caught behind: sawn off by a howler.
Williamson lbw: DRS used to vindicate a coat-of-varnish decision where batsman should have got benefit of doubt. Review lost.
Latham lbw: Starc around wicket. Natural angle across batsman. DRS has it straightening from the time it hits pad. Still clipping outside half of leg. Review unfairly lost.
Warner lbw: ball taking all of bail, but umpire must be vindicated at all costs. Review unfairly lost.
Khwaja caught behind: another howler. Umpire misses big nick. Let's all bag McCullum.
Agreed, we should be 1-0 up in the series.

I'm a big fan of DRS, but my favourite moment was when Khawaja was given out edging Swann behind. Review.

20 minutes of conclusive proof that he didn't even almost touch it.

Decision upheld as out.

Confusion all round.

Eh, should anyone be surprised. It's kinda expected that umpires and chance always seem to pile on when you're already on the back foot - partly perception and the rarity of near-wickets though umpires tend to lean the way the wind is blowing too.

Practically though, this game would have been interesting at 179/3 and currently it's not.

This post is worse than complete and utter rubbish

So you get rid of DRS. Then what happens? All the marginal bad decisions still don't get changed. And a whole lot of really, really bad decisions that would have been fixed won't be.

utter stupidity

Nah, the technology is used properly in rugby and league. It's stupid to have the players running around on the field doing the reviews. They have a split second to judge what has happened and no replays, and have to decide whether to review. Meanwhile everyone on TV is getting replays and can see the errors mounting.

Some small consolation for me, I somehow don't feel quite so cheated about losing the iconic boxing day test to the Windies, with probably about double the international audience as this test and Brissy have been...

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
Gee I'm so glad we went with 5 bowlers but didn't include the guy who buys wickets because the last thing we'd want to do is pick a guy who produces wickets against the grain because he's too expensive.

only 2 changes that need to happen:
- Margin on Umpire's Call for lbw reduced
- Reviewing team doesn't lose review for Umpire's call

then it would be pretty much perfect
I'd be fine with 'umpire's call' if it wasn't entirely in the batsman's favour, so nicking the stumps and very narrowly missing are both in the yellow zone

That's just willful ignorance of the point. You think I was trying to say we should be winning the series? Don't be a clown. If Kane doesn't get given on his coat of varnish lbw and Baz doesn't get given out caught when he didn't hit the ball, we may at least save the test. To say nothing of the Southee dismissal in the same innings where hotspot showed nothing.

To an extent I don't feel sorry for teams that lose reviews on Umpire's Call. The system is there to overturn an absolute howler, and is set up to be able to overturn absolute howlers and absolute howlers alone.

If captains decide to review a marginal call on the off chance of picking up a free wicket, that's on them. They know about the margins before they make that strange arm gesture.
