The suggestion (numerous times in this thread) of dropping either Rashid or Moeen is stupid. They both must play. 5 pacers is an overkill. In fact, I think 4 pacers is an overkill. That's why I want to drop Stokes. His bowling is not needed, and his batting alone isn't good enough to keep him in the team. The idea that he's a better batsman than Bell/Bairstow/Taylor in these conditions is laughable.
Are you proposing we are more likely to be effective if our spinners bowl another 30 overs per game? If your spinners aren't good enough to bowl long spell in tandem over here then you have to have 4 seamers, because its far to hot and humid for 3 seamers to keep rotating an end. Stokes's average of 35 and economy of 3 per over are pretty good for these wickets and the two days play I've watched he seemed pretty close in speed to Wood (don't know if Sky has the bowling speed technology in use back home) and a lot faster than Broad and Anderson. As a batsman I'd say he was better than Bairstow and has a better record over his test career with a similar number of innings. Bell looks like he might be creeping back to some batting form and he is clearly behind Root and Cook. Short-term my gut reaction is Taylor would get more runs in the UAe, but I'm not that convinced Taylor has a technique that will work better than Stokes in South Africa. Stokes's problem is the number of times he plays daft shots very early in an innings and his average is decimated by his 3 ducks on the bounce against India. If he gets up to around 15 he generally goes on to a 50 plus, but he needs to really work on how he gets through his first 6 or 7 overs. With the lack of balance/quality in our spin attack I think we need 4 seamers and he's done a decent job as the fourth seamer in this series. He also played well first innings in Abu Dhabi, was sent out try and make fast runs in the second. Gave away a dreadful wicket in the first innings of the second test, but I thought he applied himself well in the second innings.

Don't agree with this entirely. Just seemed like a case of lulling the batsman into expecting legspin and then slipping in the googly. I do agree that the cricinfo commentary was very harsh. It was not a stupid shot.
No, it wasn't the googly that fooled him though. Unless he'd been LBW playing straight I don't think you can say that. It was so full - a half volley in fact. He was playing it to the leg side.

You could argue that it was the change in field that had more of an effect.

But I think it was certainly strange that he went from reading length perfectly to that dismissal.

Yeah I think Taylor should go into the middle order, because in a very short time he'll be replacing Bell at 3.

Leave Moeen opening. Yeah it was a one-off. I don't think he's been awful, and it's just for one more test.
There has been no advantage to it though. Just make Bell open.

See that England (or an 'England XI') are playing Hong Kong in a One Day warm-up before the ODIs. I like that, really good to see an associate side get a decent run-out, albeit a warm-up, against a Full Member. Should happen more often.

Yeah I really do think there's a lot of merit in using associates for tour games. Hosts are finding it increasingly difficult to supply decent opposition for touring teams without disrupting their domestic competitions, and associates are increasingly improving to the point where they'd be every bit as good to warm up against as the mishmash teams and understrength domestic sides that end up playing a lot of the time, especially in limited overs cricket.

Hong Kong actually have ODI status though so I think it's a shame England haven't just decided to make their warmup a proper ODI.

The Afghanis have called for teams touring the UAE to play them in warmup games. Win-win IMO.

Hahaha, we always laugh at others who do the same so got to laugh at Botham there.

Wood rested then, ankle used as reason. Not sure I like thought of 3 spinners so are we just replacing him with Plunkett?

Wood out and so is Imran Khan.

Big blow for both teams, more so for England because Wood is by far their best bowler in this series.
