Bairstow still to bat in the match. I wonder what's the latest a specialist batsmen has come in for his first innings.

Annoyingly, Buttler probably won't have a chance to fail in this innings. Should have been dropped for Taylor for this test. It's a disgrace he hasn't played.

Well he'd still be sat in dressing room anyway but he should have probably.

Think 6 bowlers is overkill even if 3 of them can bat. Buttler is under pressure for his place at present. If Bairstow scores some runs he will be under even more.

On this pitch 5 batmen is overkill!!

bairstow is even worse than buttler tbh.
Yeah but he is in form this year which Buttler isn't. Not discussing the glovework here but if Buttler barely scores a run this tour and Bairstow does then they have a decision to make as they need to get the balance of the side right for SA.

Buttler's never been a top wicketkeeper-bat in the CC. It's ODI form and Prior being desperately crap that got Buttler in the team, not 4 day form.
in all honesty, neither are in great international form and neither are going to succeed in the short term so it makes sense to back the guy you think will produce results in the long run.

the management clearly think buttler is that man.

Maybe, but if he fails here after a crap summer then they have a decision to make. That is all I am saying.

Can't agree with that move, Root scores consistently where he is and no other batsman can be relied on to do that. Any opener can get a good one in the first 10 overs, we could easily end up 20 - 6 if Root and Cook get out early.
Root is facing the new ball anyway as England are often 2 down very early. He might as well face it early and then see off the new ball and help the rest of the team cope better.

That's my logic.

Probably not best for Root, but best for the team.

Cook's only been runout once in test cricket but it did happen the last time he got his highest score in Asia..
