I'm not sure if they're going to open with Azhar. Misbah and the team management seem to be quite firm on him batting at 3. If anything, they might push Malik to open but let's see.

I read a piece today that given Malik's clout, a few failures from Shafiq and you Malik will permanently replace him.

That would be a massive shame. Misbah will be gone very soon and Younis probably has at best another 18 months in him, so Shafiq along with Azhar will be crucial in the next few years. They have stuck with Shafiq over the years even when out of form, so I'd reckon Malik after this series will replace Misbah in the middle order.

when was the last time someone came back to a test team after 5 years and scored a ton straight away? usually these long term second chances fail miserably

^why not?
Because it distrubs the team balance a little. What happens when Azhar comes back?

Malik is not going to be a long term prospect in test cricket. I have seen his entire career to know that.. Shafiq, Fawad are the long term options..if Malik stays, one of them will have to be dropped.

If you open with him, Hafeez/Shehzad who are both better options then him will be dropped. It just ruins the structure and future plans..

Next year Pakistan will be touring England and Australia, and you can't expect much from Malik there..but you can from Shafiq, Fawad, Shehzad etc.
