Sorry but that is absolute rubbish

Clearly straight into the fingers but as he was going across and down, part of the ball touched the ground after he had it under control

Nonsense
Read the rules, ball cannot touch ground at any point. Fingers under ball is a myth which needs to die.
I feel like you both have a point.

91Jmay is right that those are the rules, but social is right that it's a stupid ****ing rule and if the ball is caught and under control why the **** does it matter if the ball touches the ground after. How long do you have to have the ball before it can touch the ground? If you hold it for 10 seconds, run around celebrating then touch it to the ground to roll it back to the umpire is that not a catch?

Ball can touch the ground after the catch is completed obviously. Reasonable in this case to say he was still taking the catch but if say a fielder catches the ball and then falls to the ground and it touches the ground while in their hand that's out IMO.

Smitteh taking pity on Cook and England, decides to make a game of it.

It's all very confusing. Where does "in control" start and when does it end? I mean, sheesh, Gibbs had it safe as a house and only lost control after he decided to throw it up to celebrate.

The last part is not true at all though, can't grass it while it's in your hand and diving down, quite clearly. That's how the rule is always applied.

No the rule is fine because once player has control it is a catch whatever happens to ball.
