That is a given.

Milne should become a pyjama specialist as he is so vital and yet so fragile. Don't want another Shane Bond scenario. 10 years of Milne is important. I for one consider ODI cricket to be very important. Plus, he can make good coin in T20. In tests and first class he will just be broken.

Anderson's role is a rare gem. Bowls like McClenahan but bats to redeem the role to star quality.

South Africa next?

So

BMAC
Guptil
Kane
Taylor
Elliot
Anderson
Ronchi
Southee
Boult
Milne
Santner

Fair enough I think. Ronchi will get time, but after a horror world cup and this series will know he is running out of time if he fails again. Elliot is safer, but I suppose at his age, and with Neesham about knows he needs a few knocks every series.

Elliot batting at 5 doesn't fear Neesham. He fears Munro finding form, Jesse going sober or a new batsmen arising.

I'd like to see Munro and Sodhi tour.

But that XI you have listed looks the core and "A" team atm. Santner may bat a little higher than XI (like 8).

Oh just **** off already McCullum you clown. I'd love to hear his brother justify picking him ever again. He's always been a joke but he's just taking the piss now with his ineptness.

He's not had a good tour.

He deserved to go on tour. But its been a nightmare for him.

England batsmen can only dream of facing McCleanghan and NMac in the next World Cup.

Not really, but he was always going to wasn't he. But with Santner's emergence he should be done as an international option. Hell both Patel (who was always a better one day option) and Sodhi should be ahead of him too.

Fact is if his name wasn't McCullum he wouldn't be near the team.

Jeets doesn't want to play and NMac had a good record before this tour. His ODI stats economy have taken a hammering.

I don't think there is such strong nepotism as you suggest given Vettori was preferred for the World Cup and Santner took his spot on this tour.

But Sodhi is knocking the door down for a go in limited overs. His domestic performances have been impressive.

Another seam allrounder to bat 8 would be nice. Southee is not going to develop as a batsman. Santner may be the long term bowling allrounder, but we are looking weak in the lower order.

Jeets does want to play. He made it very clear that he didn't want to play for that particular tour to the West Indies, but that he still hoped to play for NZ in the future.

Given the number of chances given to other players I would have hoped the same would be given to him, especially since he is actually our best spinner in all forms of the game.

But he cannot bat at #8 - which he would need to do given our current seam bowling options. You would need Anderson and Neesham both in the team to carry Jeetan in the batting line up despite his 2 first class tons. I admit that the same could be said for Sodhi.

Based on nathan's recent performances with the bat I dont think he can bat 8 either. He is 35 the only reason he should stay about is mentoring Santner.
Really hope Sodhi gets a crack shortly in limited overs cricket - ideally not on NZ grounds

Not really all that concerned tbh. England have a good batting lineup now and are always decent in home conditions.

Coming out a nose ahead in the Tests by drawing away is the main thing I'll take away here.
Agreed, maybe it was the time zone but I just couldn't be bothered with limited overs stuff after the test series.

Can we stop pretending jeets is good. The kast time he took a wicket in the plunket shield paddles was still playing.

He isn't our best spinner and he definitely isn't our best package. Craig and tadtle are better. Jeets spent all his tests (more tests to his name than craig btw) being innocuous

Pretty sure we were talking odi and not tests. I know I was talking odis.

Craig's test spot is in no danger to anyone at the moment.

This is just straight up denial.
He was demonstrably our best spinner even when Vettori was playing.

Craig has been excellent, particularly with the bat, but there's no way he's a better bowler than Jeets.

Another bit on Boult from a TV3 article:

He's yet to undergo a scan to reveal the severity of his back problem, and despite his cricketing history being littered with similar injuries, Boult is confident he won't be out of action for too long.

"I'm pretty sure I can come back from it, it's not as if it's going to affect the rest of my career, hopefully anyway. But yeah, I had a stress fracture when I was 18 and I remember sitting there when I was pretty young sitting there in the doctor's office going through the scans, and there's a lot of information that comes out of them, but my gut feeling is that I will be okay."

With the huge IPL dollar dwarfing domestic contracts, it begs the question as to how our senior players with ongoing injury concerns wish to be managed in the future.

A common consensus on here will be save them for the tests, but I am not convinced that that will be the player's election.

I'm a big Ronchi fan, but I fear for his hand eye given his age.

Watling can either develop, which I doubt given the keeper batting low needs to be a power hitter in the modern game, or another keep be groomed.

if Watling could develop I could see a spot for him opening in limited overs though.
Bat him at 5 as the Elliott replacement, IMO. Strike rotation role whereby he gets settled in during the middle overs, than can have a crack at the end. Did it well on the A-team tour last year.

You could even then go for a Neesham-Anderson-Santner 6-8, which gives you some serious bowling flexibility:

1. Guptill
2. McCullum *
3. Williamson (7)
4. Taylor
5. Watling +
6. Neesham (6)
7. Anderson (5)
8. Santner (4)
9. Southee (2)
10. Milne/Henry (3)
11. Boult (1)
