I'll rate Sanga just ahead in tests now I think. But that might change by the time of his retirement.

662 runs in 14 tests with an average of 26.48 with a sub-20 score 72% of the times and single-digit score 10 times - actually quite good indeed.

Haha, oh dear. I have nfi why you're bringing up his Test record in a thread about ODIs.

Heh, yeah. Strangely enough Tendulkar's ODI Australia record isn't talked about anywhere near as much as Ponting's tests in India.

It's not really strange considering tests > ODI's. Besides, Tendulkar won us the 08 CB series with back to back innings in the finals, that's good enough for me

Its 47 in ODI's, Tendulkar only averages 30 against Australia in Australia from 25 matches with only 1 hundred and 14 of those innings under 14. ;)

30 isn't a piss-poor ODI average. 26 is a piss-poor test average.

Edit: OMG! OS' signature!

Pontings test average is 51, you are mixing test average with in a country against a country average. To give you an example Ponting averages 119 in Pakistan but we don't say Pontings test average is 119.

Oddly, this never gets appriciated when discussing Murali vs Warne. Suddenly those roads turn in to viciously spinning dustbowls at a wink.
How many touring teams went into Sri Lanka with a spinner near the caliber of Murali. Only one, and Warne was brilliantly successful in Sri Lanka.

Opposing teams went to Sri Lanka primarily with fast bowlers, as that is what most teams have at their disposal. The dustbowls, while conducive to spin (Murali) are/ were unhelpful to most quicker bowlers. Hence why they were called roads.

It's not that complicated. The wickets took spin, but we're unresponsive to pace.

Re the topic. Ponting was comfortably the better batsman in odi's and while the gap is smaller in tests, for me Ponting is still ahead.

Tendulkar / Laura
Ponting

Sangakkara

Kallis/ Dravid/ etc

Just my opinion of course.
