How many touring teams went into Sri Lanka with a spinner near the caliber of Murali. Only one, and Warne was brilliantly successful in Sri Lanka.

Opposing teams went to Sri Lanka primarily with fast bowlers, as that is what most teams have at their disposal. The dustbowls, while conducive to spin (Murali) are/ were unhelpful to most quicker bowlers. Hence why they were called roads.

It's not that complicated. The wickets took spin, but we're unresponsive to pace
.
In that case Southee and Boult (averages of 13 and 15 in SL respectively) must be good!

Chaminda Vaas took wickets @ 26 at home. It's about knowing how to bowl there.

Only SSC is a road in SL.

SSC batting avg: 35.46
Adelaide batting avg: 36.10
St. Johns batting avg: 38.47

^ These are all roads.

With respect to Tendulkar fools. Take away Sydney, and Tendulkar is a huge failure in Australia. A loser, a pathetic crumble of fail. Only fools would look to a record in Australia as one country. Australia is so big that it is like three of any other country. Sydney is actually like India (spinners ground that is a road) and the only Australian ground (except Brisbane) in similar longitudes as India. So Adjusted Averages are now.

Ponting in India + Sydney - 45
Tendulkar in Australia - Sydney - 35

Back on Topic (is that allowed?)

I did not see Sangakara bat enough. Ponting, however I watched a lot. What he did have, averages aside, was an awesome ability to take a game away from the opposition. Often, after he had batted it was game over. The bowlers were demoralised. Not in a Gilchrist way, where the bowlers were unlucky, but in a Ponting way, where the bowlers were powerless. Bowl short, ball in the ropes with a perfect pull. Bowl up - ball in the ropes with an amazing drive. Bowl wide, ball in the ropes with a cut. Bowl on legs, ball in ropes with a flawless clip. Scored with such speed that a huge part of 3 world cups was Ponting.

I'd say Ponting > Sangakara in ODI, but that is unfair. I have not watched Sangakara play. I've only seen his statistics and as the above shows, statistics can be hugely misleading

I think in general it's somewhat stupid to put down a great career because of rare failures in certain conditions.. Very very few players have perfect records everywhere they play, and if they do they are other issues you can point to. It makes more sense to evaluate their overall careers while giving credit to what they've done and then make an evaluation from that.

Sobers failed in NZ.. does it mean anything? I think not.

i felt that sanga has been the better player recently, it really just felt like ponting went missing in the world cup

Yep second this, banging it into the pitch will yield nothing but getting it up there and particularly getting it to swing is the key in Sri Lanka, it's true the pitches aren't particularly conductive to pace but the humidity helps. Even Kulesakara has a decent test average in SL ffs

This is utterly bizarre logic. The SCG =/= India.

Isn't it more bizarre logic to even make a point about record in Australia? Is one of those pitches alike? Why not see who has best record in Lords/Melbourne/Wanderers/Eden Park?

What country record idiots should really do is list records on pitch types. Would Australia have the most varied pitches to play on?

Ok, O'Reilly too, but that's literally it.

I dont know what matches you guys watching but ponting should have retired around 2010 from one day cricket he could barely hit the ball and he was nervous against the short pitch bowling, and he could barely time the ball when he played his attacking shots. You cant compare Sangakara with ponting cause Sangakara is a proven match winner until the day he retired.
