I think this is basically true, but Australia probably have too much icing in their lineup to really look at it like that.
Way too much icing. I feel like I'm in danger of becoming a diabetic just looking at their batting line-up.

Despite the toning received in this match, Southee still with sub 20 average in the tournament. NZ with best bowling attack so far.

Yeah said before the world cup that the Australian line up looks brittle, they need Clarke to come good or drop one of the Warner clones and bring in Bailey.

yesterday was the first time I've seen Anderson and wsrner crack. Southee cracked as a kid but that's the first time in a long time.

All three pulled themselves toge theher though so my takeaway is look out whoever plays these two sides in the knock outs.

Just read this thread. Some really bizarre posting from a small number of neutrals about expected scores and world class players, but interesting to read the emotional rollercoaster.

I would just like to point out how I find it disgraceful that there wasn't a better mix of commentators for this game. I think I counted 3 Kiwis (Smith, Doull, Richardson) and about 6 Australians (Waugh, Warne, Slater, Border, Julian, Lee). I didn't notice Healy or Nicholas, for which I am immensely relieved but FFS, can we not have a more balanced commentary team? If there's 3 Kiwis available, then 3 Aussies and 3 neutrals please.

Yeah at one point I think there were three Aussies in the box. It was stupid.

I'm a member of a tech forum and some of the posts they have on there about the cricket are hilarious

So the fast bowler swung everywhere, baited Warner with a few boundaries and sixes, and then bowled one with no swing and tricked Finch. Is that what happened? Or is it random luck
I wonder if we actually have any spinners today ... or issit lots of fast bowlers vs Australia?
Could be wrong but I think boult southee and vittori are all spin bowlers. It looked pretty mild spin tho, about 300mm worth of lateral movement

Have checked out scores at Auckland since then, and while most games have tended towards lower scores, 350 around is very much gettable and chaseable if teams just last 50 overs, still feel, if not 400.

And how many since the introduction of two new balls?

Clarke has to bat three, TPC to four and my man Gorgeous George Bailey at five. Maxwell goes to six and Forkers should play as well. He's an ODI weapon. Watson has been an ODI gun but he's a million miles out of nick and shouldn't play atm. I know Bailey has been ordinary of late but hes at least shown he stil has he ability to rebuild an innings for the side as he did in the recent tri series game.

Arun
Gravy
Captain Blood
TPC
Jimmy Stewart
Big No
Rad
Forkers
Johnson
Starc
Pat the Rat/ Haze

I don't care if that means Forkers bowls ten overs. He is less likely to die in a ditch doing so than Watson. Maxwell/ Arun/ TPC/ at a pinch Clarke to deliver the other 10 between them.

The only other alternative I can see is they drop one of Finch or Warner and bat the Long Nosed Bilby (Watson, who's a protected species it seems) at opener.

Well, we'll see how Southee bowls his first over when (and it is when) NZ play the WC final.

I don't care who is happier or not and all that rubbish. But people saying its just a random match which means nothing in terms of judging the players is oversimplying it. You know Starc is capable of delivering at the crunch now (I guess we already did but this is something else). You know Vettori still has it in him to dry up runs if the frontliners get caned. You know that Baz can beast it against the best, and not just minnows like England. You know Elliott is a piece of luggage. We know Southee gets nervous etc.

I actually think this will be good for Southee. He won't be all over the place bowling with nerves in his next big game, he'll be far more calmer. Zaheer needed something like that in 2003 when he bottled it.
Elliott's dismissal was terrible, granted... looked like he totally misjudged the line of the ball. But it's far too simplistic to form a whole bunch of fixed assumptions from one game.

Elliott played one of the great rearguard ODI innings just a month ago, when NZ were down and out, so can't see how he's suddenly a piece of luggage after one admittedly terrible dismissal.

Ross Taylor & Aaron Fitch were also bowled all over the place, are we going to form a fixed assumption about them as well?

Can we say the same about Johnson suffering nerves under pressure because his figures were actually worse than Southee's. And who knows, in the next game Johnson may be amazing & Starc may get pumped all over the place. I agree Southee didn't respond well yesterday, but I've also seem him respond well in pressure situations prior to today, same applies to Mitchell Johnson.

Not saying you can't take anything away from yesterday at all, but seems a tad fickle & simplistic to form fixed assumptions from it, especially the comment on Elliott...remembering this guy had his best ODI series against Aust on their faster bouncier tracks.

One thing of note regarding psychological pressure is that this is by far the biggest home crowd the (current) BCs have ever played in front of. Aussie will be well used to playing in large, hostile, foreign stadiums (as are we) but we haven't played in front of that many people at home for 30 years.

My opinion is that a big home crowd can be a lot of pressure because they expect you to win. The BCs ought to be much better for this experience.

Nah holes in batting ability/shot selection exposed here.

Look both these teams have gun bowlers, but don't tell me that Twatto, Clarke and the two chop-ons were good bowling. Same with McCullum, Vettori and Anderson's dismissals. There was a **** load of thrown away or sloppy wickets. That's okay, that is ODI cricket. But there was some poor batting on display. It made for a ****ing awesome match to watch.
See I thought this would go undetected. Cummins zeroed in on McCullum's weak area, from ball one. He ain't comfortable against the short stuff. Whether it was a "good" delivery or not, it was right where you're likely to pick him up and it did the job. Pay all the others though.

Yeah McCullum is weak to slow half trackers outside off, it was definitely a good plan by Cummins.

Southee has bowled some amazing overs under pressure in t20s and ODIs before. His temperament is not under question.

He had a bad day and still took 2 key wickets.
