As a counter-argument, you'd end up with a surfeit of dead matches across the tournament; you'd be sticking a fork in England already.

The football leagues in England introduced the play-offs for that very reason - to keep the middle part of the table competitive for as long as possible, and keep as many teams within contention of progressing for as long as possible. I actually quite like this format.
Are you suggest they don't deserve it? Its easy to say in hindsight which teams will make it and which won't, yes on current form and teams its likely that AUS/NZ and IND/SA make their respective groups, but it only takes 1 loss and suddenly things become interesting, you could easily have 2-3 teams tied on points and suddenly NRR and how you've played (how well or how badly) suddenly means a lot more.

Got-em !! *** off you're out ....(sorry that wicket made me feel like Bill Lawry, especially with the juggle.)

Now just one massive wicket (Mathews or Mahela) away from that soft under-belly that is SL's lower-order.

Afghan Pace > Ireland, Zimbabwe, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and perhaps = West Indies and Pak.
I think all of those pace attacks are arguably better than Afghanistan except the Irish.

They're promising and they have some great basic skills but I think we're getting ahead of ourselves. They're better in NZ because they've been playing here so much lately. They know the line and length to bowl on NZ pitches. I suspect you'd see them get taken to task a bit more in Australia and they'd get picked apart in Asia.

They're definitely ODI quality but pretty much everyone has an optimum pace attack that when in form would be better.

*Bangers don't have a better new ball attack, but better pace attack. #qualifier

Brainless batting there, but gotta love Hamid

Hamid has everything. The headband. The face paint. The celebrations. And he can bowl pretty well too. My new favourite non-New Zealander.

Critical time now. A number of 'inferior' teams have taken out the top order in this tournament only for the pressure to come off and batting become far too easy for the middle order (e.g. WI vs. Ireland, RSA vs. Zimbabwe). Afghanistan need to ram home this advantage - this is the critical partnership. Nabi should be bringing in the catchers for a few overs.
