If he misses a game i am not conerned, but on race he has an exemplary record, altho overstepped on the mental illness bit with Trott.Yeh i like Warner too.On sledging they all do it,Anderson is 1 of the worst,i feel tho when it comes to pushing/shoving etc its gone too far.No one wants a Lillie Miandad event again.

Really happy for Sandhu when you got 6 pacemen in NSW who when on song can play for Australia, its a hard call.Hes' had a good Big Bash and Metador cup.Do feel for Behrendorf but can you afford 3 left armers in the squad.

I am not saying we don't sledge and yes Virat gives as good as he gets.. But racism is where the line is crossed, the exchange between Rohit and Warner would obviously have been in English, so if Warner still mouthed "speak English" that to me is a racial slur and needs to be dealt with I hope this is not just swept under the carpet.
Warner telling Rohit to speak English casts quite a lot of doubt on this.

Well there is no denying he's a phenomenal player, I actually wouldn't want him banned and I for one don't think he's racist, but just that that was uncalled for as a comment :)
It's an unacceptable thing to say, no doubt. A suspension would be the minimum if it were true, one would think.

So just because a known bad boy says "speak English" you think Rohit wasn't? You are either incredibly biased or incredibly naive.

For your information Rohit speaks extremely good English and he probably has a better command of English than a few of the Australian players.

The thing about saying "speak English" is that it's an extremely stupid thing to say, like all racism I guess.

Indian English for those who spoke it in school is without a doubt more grammatically correct and "textbook" English than Australasian English. It's also phonetically more accurate; NZ and Aussies don't differentiate between "beer", "bare" and "bear", for example. Or "poor" and "pore". I have no doubt that Rohit Sharma's Indian accent is easier to understand for an American or an Englishman than David Warner's Aussie drawl.

Of course there are Indians for whom English was never a conversant language (Jadeja seems like one of those people), but then expecting them to speak English well is again extremely stupid. Of course he's not going to be good at English.

That's great. Is English Rohit's first language, and do you think it's at all possible that if English is not Rohit's mother tongue, that he might have decided to give a few verbals in Warner's direction in his mother tongue, hence Warner's "speak English" comment?

If you don't think that's a possibility, then it's you who is being a little naive.

This is a weird post hendrix.

Obviously if Warner has said "speak English" to Rohit in order to mock his accent then that's not on and he should cop some sort of punishment for that. I don't know why people are jumping to that conclusion though.

It seems far more likely to me that Rohit has decided to say something in another language to Warner as part of the spat (deliberately, so Warner couldn't understand) and Warner has felt that was cowardly and told him to speak English. If so, it's not racist, stupid or intolerant at all; it's just the standard crap we've seen all tour.

Sledging in foreign language is pretty common practice ftr. Happens in club cricket in London all the time. Guess the logic is it gets in the batsman's head a bit if they're trying to think what could have been said.

Very good post! I agree with everything that you say here, it was an unsavoury comment from Warner which has no place in Cricket.

Disagree PEWS.

I don't think it matters what language Rohit was using...........Warners comment crosses the line for mine. Has Davey been sledging them in Indian all summer so that they can understand him?

I do sometimes think the racism tag gets thrown around a little too liberally on occasion, and I'm not sure it applies in this case. But at best it was a very unintelligent, bogan comment.

Nah, the logic is that the player is a cowardly **** who doesn't have the stones to sledge someone in a language they can understand.

Yes I mean even out in the shires you get that kind of thing.

Never really bothered myself.

Still in reply to Vic I'd agree but would say it would also be no surprise if Sharma was speaking English and Warner came out with what he did.

We probably won't know either way.

Warner has done well not to be banned by the ICC so far during his career.
