Tempting to say far too early to predict, but in all honesty there hasn't been too many youth-grade prodigies that you thought absolutely would make it, but didn't.

I remember seeing Jesse and Ross in a CD age-group side, and you knew they would. Tim the same, Kane the same etc. I can't remember one guy who dominated at that age group (and when I say that, I mean playing for NZ) but didn't go on. Someone can certainly correct me if so.

A guy like Richard Sherlock perhaps, but that was body as much as anything.
Going back a bit, but Craig Cumming was seen as an absolute superstar in the making when he was working his way through his high school/club years. Obviously he had an excellent domestic career, but never really translated that into anything more.

Tbh I don't even think his domestic career really fulfilled expectations. He only became a real gun at that level after his Test career was over.

Really? Never heard any murmmerings about Cumming's prodigyness.

He didn't even play for NZ U19s.

In fact just looked the years he should have played U19s to see who was in the team. And the players in those teams I had heard of young were C McMillan and M Bell.

Bell, especially as I came from ND and heard a lot about him early on, is a guy who definitely fits the bill. Peaked at 17.

Yeah, I saw Bell playing for Whangarei Boys & he had a huge reputation. Scored a triple century at an under 19 tournament which was pretty unheard of.

Leopard 131 not out against the invitational XI at Karori Park.

Your Howick mate Andrew de Boorder was someone who I thought would have gone on to bigger and better things. I heard he's more focused on his studies these days?

Anurag Verma. He was the big fish in the ND region after Southee, Boult and Williamson. Was playing Hawke Cup cricket at 17 for Hamilton (which was a massive deal at the time). Made the NZ under 19 team at 17 too (Southee and Bevan Small are the only too I can recall making that team at that age as fast bowlers). Was seen as someone who would go on to become a genuine all rounder also. Definately someone who peaked in his teens and someone who most believed would go on to play for NZ in the future.

How does the invitational side get selected? I see a T Wenlock playing for them, and I'm pretty sure there's a young batsman at my club whose name is Taylor Wenlock - wonder if it's him.
Yeah it could be; I saw ND getting some stick from their people for not sending a team to the U17s last year for financial reasons.

The time horizon for that tourney to start yielding a return isn't anywhere near fast enough for their tastes obvs, compared to a very slick presence on social media, striking while the iron is hot. Kids who can make their own way down play for that Invitational XI.

Not sure, but a guy I work with who plays club cricket in Wellington recognised quite a few of the names as young club cricketers and some who were still at school.

The same guy who played for Suburbs in AKL? Don't reckon he fits the bill. Decent, nothing much in NZ U19 colours to suggest he'd be a star - which is what I angled at.

African, Angry de passed his commerce degree, works for a firm in the city. Very smart lad, and a hell of a top bloke. Only thing I could ever say against him is he's balding and short. As for his career...I genuinely don't know. He played the best innings I ever saw, made a big FC score on debut v a good attack, made big NZ U19 runs, but I can't say why he didn't do more. Didn't help that Strangy managed him poorly.

I'm impressed that ND (and Auckland) schedule so much more 'A' cricket between themselves, than any of the other associations, including a couple of multi-day matches. Especially as the 'A' tournament now is a lightweight white-ball tournament.

Maybe that's where the U17 budget has gone .....

In the U19s, the opening bowler for Auckland, Fisher, has taken a 5-fer in his opening spell v Cantebury, 5 for 10 in a total of 55/5 (were 11/5). But interesting that all 5 either bowled or LBW.

Wondering if we should make a Leopard thread soon. Personally I am pleased he returned to cricket ( if he took a year off ) perhaps the resurgent black caps inspired him. Heard about a young Hibbs bloke who made Wellington under 17s in year 9. Has been touted as a future black cap will find out a name shortly.
