Nah, just because Latham can hoick over cow it doesn't mean he's got more options. Kane always had all the shots, he was just really good at hitting them to fielders or getting out. Remember when he had a real go at Murali for a few overs when we were losing in the 2011 semi? He happily smacked Bond around in List A as a teen too.
Latham has the shots too, but like early Kane he's struggling with building a fluent ODI innings and finding gaps. The only way to solve it is by playing lots of limited overs cricket. By the 2019 World Cup he'll be fine, but barring a breakthrough series here he's underdone for next month.

This is the role Latham performs/performed for Canterbury. (He hasn't played this year). He and B Cachopa would swap roles in the List A, Latham would take gloves and bat middle order (usually 4 rather than 5) while Cachopa would open.

Number 5 in an ODI team is a bit like 3rd seamer in the test team.
The candidates are too good at List A level to play that role at for their provinces.
You have to pick and hope.... and wait.
Elliott, closest to a specialist, and hence a step down in true class from some if the other contenders. But I'd back him to get up to speed after the next 9 warm ups.
Latham; plays multiple roles for Centerbury.
Munro; again close to a specialist, doubts about class at higher level. Has neglected his bowling anyway.
Watling; has played all over - but as a keeper again now even for ND you'd imaging he would bat high for a keeper e.g. at 5. But has he played Ford Trophy in last few years?
Brownlie; was rubbish at List A until last 12 months. Huge improvement but that has been in top 3.
So, stop worrying at let the Elliott v Latham at 5 sort itself out over next 9 games .....

Guptill > Latham in ODIs by the same margin Latham > Guptill in tests.
Latham isn't going to be a better ODI batsman than Guptill before the World Cup, and after the World Cup I suspect Baz will retire and focus on tests which means it's the perfect chance to shift Latham up to partner Guptill.
Ah. Cmon Block, take a rest and come back refreshed for the Australian Test series at the end of the year.

Not sure if anyone's pointed out no Kane for the next 3 or so games, due to a shoulder injury. But more interestingly, talk that at some point before the World Cup he will captain and Baz will have a breather.
Bit hard to accept that either team are taking this series that seriously, when the whole exercise seems geared towards the World Cup

Gah. What awful and typical hubris from an Australian. Chris Rogers talking about retiring after the Ashes because:
"But also, I think, looking forward for the Australian side, there's got to be a time when they start to rebuild the side, and maybe with the Tests that are on next summer there might be a little bit less pressure and it might be the ideal time for a younger guy to come in and get some experience."
Blatantly casting New Zealand as easy-beats there. Good to see Australian cricket's view on New Zealand hasn't changed from the 1940s.

Could you be any more sensitive? He's not calling you easy beats for god sake, he's saying that a three test match series at home has less pressure than a 5 match Ashes series in England, for a debutant no less.
