ok so I didn't include a) anything before his 09 Ashes comeback and b) a handful of 2 or 3 test series that were 1-0 going into the third test in which the trophy may have been secured already

I think his dead rubber average is 45.21. However, since the 13 Ashes, it's gone up to 67.4, including today
also since the start of his 2013 ashes i think his live series average is like 27 or something

Then why did you say with "Haque" Chandimal & Latham to a lesser extent..
Yeah, I wasn't clear there, hence the correction
And since minnow bashing is the flavour of the day why is Root in the upper tier when all he's done in Tests so far is feast in home conditions off dire bowling.
Isn't that what Smith is doing atm in fairness? (not that I'd hold it against him, but it's your argument). Which bowling attacks in particular has Root been prospering against that are any worse than this Indian attack is in Aust conditions?

The point is more than Root hasn't scored that many against anyone else

Smith has been scoring heaps of runs in other conditions throughout 2014, not just at home.

Smith scored runs against England and South Africa. Against Australia Root generally struggled.

Look at their career records, they're virtually identical. Both have bullied India. Root averages 33 against Australia and Smith 37 against England &. The only thing in Smith's favour is a ton against South Africa and Root is yet to play against them. Not suggesting either is better, but let's not make out their records are remarkably different. :p
