The impression from the news reports are clear. The hoards of sanctimonious ****wits who know nothing about the game are coming to attack. On the plus side, they'll get bored in a few days and jump onto the next bandwagon.

Awful stuff though.

poor ****er. he's really lucky it happened in a state or international though where there are actually competent people around. if that happened in a grade game or even at training you wouldn't stand a chance.

do we think they'll abandon the rest of the games today? probably have to unless they plan on replaying this match in a few months. doubt there's gaps in the schedule though.

9:33am: Round four of the Sheffield Shield has been abandoned following Phil Hughes' injury at the SCG, Cricket Australia announced on Wednesday.

"We've spoken to players and the ACA [Australian Cricketers' Association], and given how players across the country are feeling right now, it's just not the day to be playing cricket and we understand that," said Cricket Australia's Pat Howard.

"thoughts & prayers..."

Yairsss. This vacuous & usually hypocritical Americanism has been getting more and more embedded in our culture of late. And when you think about it, it's stupid.
They believe in a God. They pray to this God so that X will get better. So who got X injured/sick in the first place? Bah!

If you don't believe in his then leave that part out. Easy.

Cancelling the shield is a good outcome and CA has listened to ACAs' cliams, players just not up to it atm.
My prayers and thoughts to Hughes and his family.
Sidecast i am a christian so reserve the right to say this and its also been said by many whatever they believe.
Heartened Adam Gilchrist invoked the words of the footsteps of Jesus carrying us when we are weak, cause surely its in gods hands now.
However i am not that hopeful,i guess i am human.

I think it's also a time for some certain Aussies to reflect on their threats, Michael Clarke for instance, highly close friend of Hughesy and one of the first to the hospital might want to think twice before the "Get ready for a broken f***ing arm.." comments.

It's interesting to see a couple of articles that are along the lines of "this is an overdue reminder of just how dangerous cricket can be". Hang on a sec, buds, there were two very good examples last summer, that luckily resulted in no harm. One was the Morgan/Lee thing, which was always inexcusable, particularly C9/CA's part in it. And yes, the other was the Gabba thing. I remember following the Brisbane match somebody within the England camp leaked word about their discussions with the umpires over whether that was intimidatory bowling. My feeling was that if that wasn't, what the hell would be? Clarke wasn't exactly speaking rhetorically, we were bowling at the body with short legs, leg gullies etc. He was a damn good chance of getting hit. Nobody cared really too much then about the serious dangers cricket features.

plz dont respond to this

Kind of the point I was looking to make, it's a sensitive one though because of the timing and incident but in my view purposefully bowling to intimidate is part of the game, you almost hope to hit, but not injure the player you're bowling at.

Pews (I think) said it best a while back about how intimidatory bowling as part of a process to dismiss the batsman is a necessary part of the game. There's always some kinds of injuries that go along with that, hopefully just a couple of bruised fingers. Intimidatory bowling to cause injury or discomfort, not so. I agree with that sentiment, I think, although terrible things like this bring everything into question.

To be clear, I don't think we should ban the short ball or whatever crazy solution. But I do think people can be a bit thoughtless to the dangers involved when they promote a sustained chin music barrage, particularly to the bowlers. Helmets aren't everything

Bowlers and captains... the example of Michael Clarke following up an over of Johnson bowling short stuff with "Get ready for a broken ****ing arm" for instance. I can't claim that I haven't offered similar sentiment in the heat of the moment before but it's poor form by a captain and something that is bound to be brought up in this instance.

A (under-educated, obviously) workmate of mine suggested that "I'm happy to see that this happened to an Australian considering they're always trying to hit and hurt players" - that's someone who doesn't follow cricket much, that's his generalist stereotypical non humane viewpoint and it's fostered through incidents like Johnson and Clarke going to town on the English and enjoying the fact that they had them completely scared.
