Test matches and day ODI's aren't so bad, it's the day/night ODI's that are impossible. For an Ashes series in England I push the sleep envelope and watch until tea every day on work days and stumps on weekends, for day ODI's easy enough to watch all the 1st innings and then a bit of the second. In fact I'd watch more play of an England Ashes series than one over here as work ****s things up.
Yeah, 7:30pm starts aren't too bad I suppose. You'd be screwed if you followed the West Indies though.

As long as I don't work as a repeatable system, the ATO regards what I do as essentially impossible without inordinate amounts of luck. As a libertarian I've found the perfect tax haven! :p

It's taxable in most other countries though; one of the reasons I haven't moved (see also: laziness).
lol. That's ridiculous.

Does it take any of the enjoyment out of sport?

Yeah it really does. I've been accused of being robotic and hyper-logical in the way I view cricket here at times; I've always been a bit that way but I think making a living out of it has made that much more pronounced. I have to be able to compartmentalise my preferences in watching and following the game from how I analyse performance and likely future performance all the time, which just straight up isn't very fun.

I got a mate who avoids drink a few nights a week and just plays poker online after chucking out time. Says he sets limit of potential losses and usually leaves once he is £200 up. Brainiest bloke I know but not worked for about 20 years as he just wins gambling all the time. Still lives at home with his parents and has never had a girlfriend though.

Do you have any other employment aspirations? Might be a tough gig telling a potential employer that your previous work was...gambling.

I'd back myself to spin it pretty well. I'm not that long out of uni; at least I generated an income while doing **** all instead of going on a massive overseas trip like so many of my friends.

Well the generation that is today's employers generally seems to think that ****ing off on a massive overseas trip is good for character or some other bull****.

Of course, that's the same generation that had free university and hence the interest on a $70K loan meant nothing to them...but that's how they think.

Nothing like two people who've never done something talking about how useless it is.

You will struggle massively to get into a finance background if you bring up that you gambled extensively. I know a guy who went to Cambridge, graduated with a 1st class Econ degree and had his offer withdrawn after EY discovered his past as a successful gambler.

huh? I work, son.

It's not about how useless it is, it's about the fact that it would be ridiculously financially irresponsible.

My parents always say that there is no better time in life to travel than when you're young - "you never get those years back", so I can see why people do it despite the financial cost

Yeah but this is exactly my point. The people saying that stuff are the people who grew up in a time where you could buy a house after saving 2 years salary and you didn't have a student loan to pay off. That's just not my circumstances.

I'm not going travelling just for the hell of it until I can afford it. The plan is to get a job in my actual career overseas (of course, you can't be taken seriously as a research scientist without taking a post-doc overseas) but I'm not just ****ing off for a year or two to work in pubs and have nothing else to show for it.

Anyway, massive tangent to the thread.

do you have a student loan?
Yes, though I've paid off a decent amount of it.

I don't really disagree with any of this; having said that don't underestimate what you can gain purely from experiencing life in a different country, even if you are just working in pubs (which is not what I'm doing ftr, I'm working in my actual career). Anyway, like you say, big tangent to the thread. Um, go Sri Lanka!

I delayed Uni for a year, worked around 50 hours a week for 5 months then travelled for 4. Got lucky that my parents only needed very minor board (I offered tbf they wouldn't have asked).

I am not criticising your choice, its a very sensible one. Just think that dismissing what a extended travel period can do for a person is a bit short sited IMO.

Back to cricket,

Weather in Edgbaston is muggy with cloud overhead. Could be some rain, but doubt the whole game is a washout even if it does. Prediction based on nothing but being a bull**** merchant, it will swing big today.
