Not quite the same as having someone like Broad to come on though, is it? Competent batsman should be able to work him for 2.5/3 an over without being in too much danger of losing their wicket.
But Broad would significantly weaken the batting line-up if he replaces Ravi. Jordan at 7 is a stupidly long tail.

I'm not arguing that 5 bowlers is a better option. Simply that only having four bowlers can be a hindrance in certain situation, such as having a side 40-4.

Bowling really hasn't been a massive weakness for this England side since Ravi came in for Woakes IMO.

Broads return is actually a bit depressing to me. He'll come in for Gurney and get carted at the death again.

Surely Broad would replace Gurney anyway. As I said earlier, it's not simply about only having four bowlers plus the part-timers, it's the quality of those four and how the captain chooses to use them.

My England 17 for the World Cup (projecting ahead a bit):
Cook, Bell, Ballance, Root, Morgan, Bopara, Buttler, Jordan, Tredwell, Anderson, Gurney,
Back ups: Vince, Hales, Willey, Broad, Kieswetter (big ? about back up keeper) Parry (and back up spinner).

Short of quality at key positions, so doubt we'd have a realistic chance of winning it.

I love it when Botham thinks something's not out/out, he'll dismiss anything that remotely suggests otherwise. It was umpires call, but quite a lot of the ball was hitting the top of leg-stump there, and Botham describes it as "clipping leg-stump at best". Unbiased commentary at its finest.

Botham actually made a good point earlier (broken clock and all that) about Sanga/Mahela's averages in England being negatively affected by Sri Lanka always playing the early test matches of a summer when bowling is easier.

Yeah it was. Had never really thought about it before but it's defiantly got merit.

SL always tours before India to experience the worst of the conditions.. the board really has no leverage to get what they want. One positive this time is that the T20I and ODIs are played before the Tests so players would have a little more time to acclimatize to the conditions.
