Kallis retires from Tests

I don't foresee an Indian collapse. The indian batters have looked very comfortable this series and there doesn't seem to be any reason for them to collapse just yet.

Kallis has played this same innings countless times over his career. That's why I said it was symptomatic of his career as a whole. I'm not saying he should have blasted from the start. He could have done more later in the day to try and push the game on against the part time spin and tiring seamers. The chances of SA losing were slim as it was from the position they were in after tea given India's conservative attitude and the light/rain situation in durban meaning plenty of time was still to be taken out of the game. He isn't match situation aware enough imo and just plays inside his bubble. You accept him for what he is. He is a great player to have in the team but not a great team player.
What utter rot. If Kallis gets out yesterday afternoon, then India have a sniff of a win that they didn't deserve with their uninspiring bowling. The rest of the team should have had the ability and nous to bat around Kallis who could provide the steady hand at the tiller to avoid collapse. There are many people who denigrate Kallis for no good reason just because he doesn't fit their idea of what a test batsman would be. It's just Symptomatic of the T20 age that there is no longer appreciation of a well constructed innings under duress.

Kallis 1 - 0 detractors.

So true. We're in an age of cricket where everyone wants dominating innings, but in the situation, it was absolutely needed that Kallis dug in. His role in the team has always been the anchor, and he's been the best in the world at that role for decades (okay I'm not going to get into the Dravid debate but you get the point). Recently he's been able to play expansively - remember his first 200 he scored came in about 270 deliveries - but in this situation we'd had a minor collapse and needed to play safe. He did that.

Was pretty poor of Agnew during the lunch break on TMS mentioning Kallis' retirement only to immediately point out how much he bored him - without a word of congratulation or recognition for one of the greatest all-rounders in the games' history -- no matter personal preferences for styles of play. Ugh, what has happened to cricket celebrating cricket and when did this rampant nationalism creep into the game? TMS. Ugh.

Anyway, well done Jacques!

Well considering Boycott only talks about English players - whom he refers to as 'we' - I would think he'd have absolutely nothing to say on the subject. Anyway, don't want to hijack the Kallis retirement threat. My lasting memory of him is getting run out for 99 at Melbourne.

I would think Boycott would rate Kallis highly firstly because they have a similar mindset and secondly because he thinks Agnew is a tool

WTF is going on with cricinfo??

Kallis has just made a ton in his last test match and there is not a single (main) article devoted to him on their homepage this morning??. Rewind that a few weeks to Sachins last test, or even more recently Swanns retirement..........that is a serious disgrace and lack of respect for a retiring legend who delivered to the end.

There were some videos comparing him to Sobers and Imran etc and yesterday a video asking if he was the best ever no. 4.

The lack of decent crowds for his last test is real sad though. In a way good for Sachin he didn't have to play his last test here.

Greatest cricketer I've ever been lucky enough to watch. Full stop. It'll be a long time before we see another one like him, if at all.

Two things: reckon a number of his iconic moments came over the last three or four years (last SA vs Ind tour, e.g.) and that while you can validly criticise the how, eventually Kallis' numbers subside a lot of it.

Have you selected the global edition? There is a tiny menu on top. Cricinfo is thoroughly professional. They are not going to leave Kallis' retirement inadequately covered.
