Oh I'm definitely not saying he's a capable batsman in general, but Rahane would've seen him play Ashwin in the nets; could well be he's a capable player of off spin bowling.
It's unlikely, gotta admit. But I just want to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Despite what people have been saying I don't think Jadeja was picked because the selectors really thought he'd offer runs; he was picked because they thought he'd bowl better than Ashwin in these conditions. So the success of his selection will live or die based on that really. I thought it was pretty odd in general but I'm not going to slam it until he's actually bowled. The fact that he can bat probably weighed in to his selection ahead of Ojha (not Ashwin) but you don't expect runs from someone you pick as a bowler who can bat every innings; just occasionally.
