I'm no physiological expert my man, but I would assume that the physical exertions of an elite fast bowler exceed that which a human body is used to coping with to a greater extent than your unfit bloke down the street. Sure the training they do and their natural attributes (flexibility, strength etc.) would help with susceptibility, but the strain produced by running that bit faster, striving for that bit more would be unnatural, I reckon. Is why you see so many more professionals getting injured compared to 12 year olds, especially at the start of a career. Dunno.
To be honest I think children are probably a different category. Just more naturally flexible and less injury prone in general aren't they?

However it doesn't add up to me at all that a fit, athletic fast bowler with access to expert bowling coaching would be MORE likely to be injured than a fat, unathletic slob with a home-made bowling action who is equally trying to bowl as fast as he can?

when you're unfit you're not pushing your body's capabilities though, you're pushing your FITNESS capabilities. The more athletic and fit you are the more you're able to push your body's physical limits which is why higher level players get injured more than lower level players.
Well there are two different issues being discussed here, injuries and fitness. I thought that fitness was also being raised here (Southee can't bowl 9+ on the trot as he will be too exhausted). That doesn't add up to me.

In terms of injuries, before the fat bloke gets tired (e.g. bowling your first over) what's preventing him from straining his body as much as HE can?

Rutherford really does not look like a test match opener to me. His technique is even looser than Powell's.

The worry about southee bowling 9 on the trot isn't fitness, I'm sure his fitness allows him to bowl well over 10. The worry is simply that long spells make injuries more likely no matter how good your fitness is. Seeing as we rely so heavily on Southee it's a silly risk.

Bradburn: "You have to earn the right to score runs here."

Oh ffs, is "You have to earn the right" the official logo of New Zealand Cricket now?

Well the two most realistic candidates for Rutherford's spot will probably be batting by late tomorrow at the latest for Auckland.

We have first class games before India right surely? Tell him he's on notice and needs big tons for Otago. I want to see him bat in the same circumstances as the other blokes.

Sometimes I think that Hamish Rutherford is what would happen if Suresh Raina decided he wanted to be a test match opener.

A fat bloke CAN'T strain his body as much because his fitness and athleticism prevent him moving his body fast enough to put any real strain on his body. His body will still have similar physical limits to a top athlete difference is he doesn't approach them.

Yeah, bit of bad luck for Rutherford, but it's high time he was dropped.
He needs a serious sorting out but not to be dropped. At the same stage in his career, Williamson had scored marginally less runs at a lower average.

is this true? Do long spells increase your chance of injury, or is it simply total numbers bowler? These are the types of questions that I actually haven't seen answered.

Fair enough. I was more just dragged into this discussion as it's one I've had before where it was suggested it was no big deal for me to play through an injury as compared to an international bowler because my bowling didn't put as much strain on my body. I didn't get the logic because I'm straining my body as much as I can just like any other wannabe quick bowler. Therefore, I'm equally affected by an injury in terms of it diminishing from my ability to go at 100%.

Also, I can vouch that coming back to cricket after many years away, overweight and unfit and trying to bowl fast, I have pretty much constant injuries ranging from niggles to at least one genuine "go down in a heap and miss a few games" every season  :(

I don't have an opinion as I don't rate any of the other domestic openers. Unless Baz wants to open again. His average is very dependent upon that 171 without it he averages 23.5 in his other matches.
