Dhoni can't bat 6 though
Nup, number 6 suits him more, he has done really well batting at that number. At 7, there are more chances of him facing the second new ball before he is well set and he doesn't look very comfortable in that situation.

No. When he promotes himself to six, we are usually in a strong position and he attacks and does well. He could do better at seven if he just slogs instead of defending.

I don't agree, but its actually a good argument IF you had to argue DHoni 6. I'd still say you're wrong but your point is interesting.

But overseas your no 6 could be coming in after 40-50 overs fairly regularly, and you need a really dependable guy with a good technique and temperament at 6, as well as another decent batsman below him, whether or not Ashwin quite fits that bill I'm not sure overseas. I need to see a little more evidence that both Dhoni and Ashwin are solid batsmen overseas before I'd be picking them 6/7 tbh

Yes of course, his good record batting six is all because of the fact that he was batting there and isn't just an extension of the other factors that caused him to bat six in first place - like, oh I don't know, the fact that every single one of those innings has been played in Asia - at all.

It's not about what number he's batting as such. Dhoni at six would be fine if you have Rohit Sharma batting seven, even if it'd seem a bit silly. It's about the fact that you need six proper batsmen in a Test match and in South Africa he's not even close to being one.

Wait, Dale Steyn actually asked Brett Lee for permission if he could do the chainsaw celebration when he got wickets?

Yeah, Philander especially. If you pick Morkel then that's what you get, but Philander was really poor in that regard. I wonder if the work he's been doing on becoming a better away bowler and a better one day bowler has got him into some bad habits; I was actually impressed with how he brought his length back in the UAE and in the one dayers he played recently but bowling the same length here was criminal.

I think the problem is when he has to come in earlier. Dhoni coming in after 45 overs would be great. He can play some of the dirty village cricket shots Prior and Haddin notoriously play.

True, but in that case Dhoni might just not fit in the playing XI:), it would be Dinesh Karthik who has a sound technique and looks a much better overseas player. Karthik has been treated a bit unfairly, can't understand the reason behind him being ignored.

Stop with this crap. First you call Prior and Haddin sloggers, now this. They, for the most part play orthodox shots. And Haddin's lofted cover drives are pure perfection

Not very difficult to understand why Dhoni is picked over Karthik IMO.

Also important to remember one of these bowlers right now is bowling to a team full of flat track bullies recently who hate the short stuff.

By that I mean Ryan Harris against the English batting.
