Yeah he's not a medium pacer but neither is Dernbach. Dernbach is quicker and younger than Rankin and Dernbach is **** so it doesn't mean much.
Never really been a Rankin fan at all. He gave Ireland something a bit different that most other associates don't have in a someone who could push his speed up to the low 140s and get awkward bounce, which made him an important part of the attack. He just made the bowling attack feel more 'real'. However, he was consistently out-performed in the side by a one time Sheffield Shield medium pacer who was in his late 30s.

Yeah he's quick and 6"7 so he gets a lot of bounce. He's definitely a loss for Ireland but he never quite lived up to his potential for us. For whatever reason part-timers like Botha, Cusack and Johnston always got the job done a lot better.
I wouldn't have had him opening the bowling. He didn't swing it and the fielding restrictions exposed his lack of accuracy. I think having our part-timers nipping it around early on and then bringing in Rankin to prevent batsmen from settling in the middle overs would have worked better. It works great for Morne Morkel, who's a very similar style of bowler. But that's not really the orthodoxy and he might even have objected to being held back behind the dobblers.

Rankin illustrates the point. Better fc bowler than odi bowler. shouldn't be anywhere near the odi team. Said in the domestic thread earlier today (before this callup) that I could see him touring australia if(big if) he stays fit. ugly bowler to face. Similiar to Harmison - can be erratic, can be a beast.

Ahh yes, his "deceptive" slower ball. He reminds me of Saj Mahmood in his pomp in some respects and if that isn't being damned with faint praise then I don't know what is.

Yeah Harmison is a very apt comparison in style, but I don't think he's quite in the same class.
I noticed Harmison made his comeback for Durham 2's a couple of weeks ago; should just recall him instead.

I don't think Woakes and Bresnan are really an apt comparison anymore. Woakes has a very good overall First Class bowling record but that average has been blowing out more and more since last injury, while his batting has come on leaps and bounds. I think Bresnan is seen to be a level or two above Woakes on the bowling front; he makes the Test side as a specialist bowler with his batting seen as a bonus or tie-breaker in selection.
If Woakes is going to play Tests I think it's going to have to be as a batsman as much or even more than as a bowler, batting at seven.
I don't think it's actually a matter of pace either. Woakes actually looks a little quicker to me now than when I first saw him; he's consistently low to mid 80s which is fine. There's just not enough to his bowling.

Indeed, but he's already retired from Ireland duty anyway so it's a moot point. He's not gonna play regardless.

Sure, he's a better longer format bowler but it is a real insult to him to have guys like Dernbach selected in front of him for odis
After all, he was considered to be surplus to requirements after 4 games with an e/r of 5 yet Dernbach has played 6 times as many matches with an e/r of well over 6
