What would your ATG Ashes XI look like?

Hobbs
Sutcliffe
Bradman*
Hammond
Chappell
Miller
Gilchrist +
Warne
Lillee
Barnes
McGrath

Heavily Australian, but hey, can you blame me?
Botham's got to be in there for his early Ashes exploits... would have him in there for Lillee...

To clarify, when I say Ashes, I just mean a team made of Aussie/English players. Can't really see a reason for putting in Botham over Lillee, the team already has great batting depth with Miller/Gilchrist/Warne.

Same theory but Aus/Eng sides. Watchability is key in selection here:

- Jackson
- Trumper
- G. Chappell
- McCabe
- Miller
- Kippax
- Tallon
- Lindwall
- Warne
- Lillee
- Mailey

- Hobbs
- Ranji
- Gower

- Woolley

Not trying to be a prick, genuinely curious here, how do you have nostalgia about players you have never seen play?!

Can't answer on his behalf, but there is footage of most of those players available. Also, written word can paint a picture.

Marshall, Ambrose and Hadlee best seam attack of the lot though I would say.

Mushtaq Mohammad a little of of place as well, given the stature of the other players in these sides.

Really would replace Tayfield with Holding, Garner or Procter, but know most people here likes to have spinners in their teams.

No arguments here, but Tayfield is really nothing special when the other teams have Warne and Murali, not to mention Barnes (who I envision as O'Reilly-like, perhaps faster). Mushtaq, compared with Miller and Sobers does seem kinda out of place, but who else is there? S.C has a keeping edge though :P

ROW wins from your teams.

SC XI

Gavaskar | Sehwag | Dravid | Sachin | Miandad | Sangakkara (w) | Imran | Wasim | Bedi/Kumble | Murali | Waqar |

ROW XI

Barry | Headley | Viv | Pollock | Lara | Sobers | Waite (w) | Hadlee | Marshall | Tayfield | Ambrose

Still ROW wins :)

wasn't sure on lara ahead of tendulkar, chappell and pollock but he pipped the rest for his consistency across the world, ability to dominate, ability to bat long innings, ability to save the team and being one of the greatest against spin.

hadlee was a toss up between him and waqar, donald or lillee but hadlee made it for being the better overall cricketer, an all time great fast bowler who can bat quite well, pretty much bowled well everywhere except in pakistan.

warne like hadlee made it over murali due to his all around cricket on offer. one of if not the best spinner ever, can bat a bit and a great slipper.

maybe swap procter for waqar.

Don't think Mushtaq is that out of place, average of 40 as a batsman and a good leg spinner with an average similar to the other specialist S.C leggies.

How about Garner/Holding over Tayfield?
Nah, kyear,a spinner like Tayfield provides a whole new dimension to the attack that neither Holding, nor Garner can match.

But I think you are wrong about having Mushtaq Mohammad in the side. If you want a spinner-allrounder, then Vinoo Mankad is a much better choice at the expense of Bedi or Kumble. Both Mushtaq and Vinoo bowled in 70 innings (57 tests for Mushtaq, and 44 tests for Vinoo), and Mushtaq fetched only 79 wickets compared to Vinoo's 162 wickets. Mushtaq was a better batsman, but I think Vinoo will add more to the side (he scored 2109 runs, averages 31.47 with 5 centuries, a highest of 231).
