***Official*** England in New Zealand series 2013

I reckon if Ronchi makes a good score against England in the warm up match, McCullum will most likely continue to open. I struggle to see the selectors playing two rookie openers at the same time. Still, we'll just have to wait and see. Wouldn't be that shocked to see Kane bumped up to open either. Let's be honest, given Guptill's form he's basically been opening since New Zealand's tour of India anyway.
Could only pan out that way if they made it the most hedged and cagey test side naming ever on Sunday.

Sodhi ruled out of the Queenstown match. Replaced by Jeets.

Hey hey, he's gets his English FC wickets at 25 per, okay. A 5/81 for Wgtn is like 9/81 for Warwickshire.

What happened to Sodhi? Why not replace him with Astle?

Anyone think it possible that BJ Watling opens with Fulton and Ronchi comes in takes the gloves and bats at 7?

Just a two-week quad injury for Sodhi by the sounds of it. Tastle only comes into the frame in two-spinner territory for Hesson, due to a 'second spinner must be a decent bat' proviso he's stated he has.

Honestly, not the worst policy IMO

He doesn't need to, that's just what we as fans want. In reality averaging 17 with the bat, bowling 10 overs for 45, and being gun in the field is more than enough for him to keep his spot from non-existent replacements. He's had this record for 2/3 years now, and nothing has changed. I wouldn't be against trialing Williamson as the main spinner for a couple of games as I said before, but realistically, that's probably not going to happen.
Nah if we just give new player of the month XYZ a run then they'll be a world class batsman/bowler/allrounder in a year or two /NZfan

Wait, you're saying my opinion in some corner of the internet actually means nothing?

"You didn't have to say it like it is!"
It's ok. Posting on cricket forums is a difficult and unrewarding elite pursuit requiring years of dedicated practice and sacrifice.

We are the real heroes here.

No doubt at some point we've made a few FC/International cricketers feel really bad about themselves. That's about it. :P
Like Jeets - see mea culpa here. Stand up and face those rocks hurled at you so fast you don't even see them like a man dammit! We all would....

After a lot of discussion over the seemingly numerous options for NZ's fourth bowler spot for the test series, the options are now looking disappointingly thin. A couple of unimpressive incumbents and a couple of longshots.

McClenaghan - Injured
Gillespie - Bowling at 70% and no point picking him if he's going to do that
B Martin - Has taken 10/691 since returning to Plunket Shield from SA
Wagner - Fit and taking FC wickets as always. Still didn't do very well in South Africa
Jeets - Only played one FC game for Wellington. Took a 5-fer but Otago were slogging for a declaration.
Butler - Bowled second change for Otago last match. A long shot.
Every good young seamer - injured. Apart from Wheeler
Allrounders - nah, we need a bowler

It will likely be Wagner. Honestly I'd rather they play Jeets than him, even though I want them to go with 4 seamers.

I suppose they could go with Anderson or Neesham

Even some conventional swing for Wagner on day 1 of this current match. That's the thing though with him, he almost needs the sedative that is the Plunket Shield atmosphere to go about his business in a motivated yet lucid manner, dominating his cbf opponents, especially the notoriously pea-hearted sides like Wellington. September A cricket at Lincoln, fmd he's a shoo-in to perform. Put him in front of 1000 people at an HRV Cup game and he's a dog with rabies again.

I feel a bit sad for the guy. I can see that he's trying his heart out, just doesn't quite seem to be able to get there at test level.

If he does get picked he should just start out trying to bowl line and length. The aggression will come later, but it's no use to anyone if he can't pitch the ball on the seam and is spraying it around at medium pace.

Could perhaps have worked if one of Vettori or Ryder was available as a reasonable 5th bowler, but they're not so we just need to pick the best pure bowler available imo.
Yeah.

Butler is probably as useful as Wagner or Patel right now and apparently he can bat, so maybe he's worth a crack.

That's if Gillespie really is still bowling at 70%.

Hamish Rutherford set for test call-up

What do we reckon? Stuff with the scoop or just speculating as they do?

McCullum said:
"Ultimately we're looking to try to shift the balance of our experience a little bit lower with the middle order. And BJ did really well in South Africa batting down the order too. He's a lot more successful batting down the order, averaging 60-odd, than batting at the top," McCullum said.

"With an eye to the future it may be an opportunity for a new guy to be tried at the top."
Left-armer Bruce Martin could snare the spinner's berth, and a long-awaited test debut at 32. Martin was unlucky not to play in South Africa and is regarded by domestic batsmen as the best spinner in the country.
Thought it would be Flynn and Fulton but not surprised if Rutherford does make his debut. Seems like he was on the track anyway and Guptill's injury has just made it a faster one. And hope Martin does debut and not NMac.
