Finn is already a Test standard bowler. If the English camp believes that by playing him over the next six months, even though Bresnan (or Tremlett, whoever) may be slightly ahead right now in the pecking order, can turn him into a sub-25 bowler - and end up overtaking these other guys - sooner than otherwise, then it's worth the investment.

You're giving up the whole integrity of the selection process for the chance at gaining something I don't really believe you're really giving yourself much more chance to achieve anyway.

As you may have noticed, I argued for Finn's inclusion in this game, and said it was the right call when it was made, so I agree that he's a Test standard bowler. I do think he's a bit over-rated for various reasons that I've gone into before but despite that, and despite the fact that I don't really 'enjoy' bowlers of his style, I thought he was the right pick for this game. Picking a player now because you think it'll make him better is absurd AFAIC. When tomorrow finally comes and you've magically made Finn a better bowler by merely selecting him when he's not the best option (which again I'll stress I thought he was for this game), you'll probably end up leaving him out because he became a 28 average bowler instead of the 26 average bowler you dreamed of, and you think playing Jamie Overton for the next four years might make him 2% better during his prime, when you'll leave him out anyway, and so on.

Just on the orthdox/PEWS debate: I will say Finn looks the kind of bowler who looks better for bowling. Needs to find his groove.

This is a fantastic spell by Finn!!He's bowled aggressively and been excellent round the wicket to the lefties angling the ball in and nipping away off the seam. This spell has given England a sniff of turning this round.

It's not even really about Finn really because I think he deserves his place in the team at the moment no matter which way you look at it; it's just me being a grumpy ****, hating on established sporting selection 'logic' and having the same discussion I've had 50,000 times before.

I'm having a bad day.
