**Official** South Africa in England 2012

Yeah, given that they were 105 for 5 we shouldn't have let them get over 200. Looks like they'll get over 250 now.
I never understand this mindset.

"Well we got them 5 for 105, so therefore they shouldn't be able to get over 200"

Why? They still had Rudolph and Duminy in, and its not like England bowled brilliantly to get them 5 down anyway, there was a fair bit of luck and **** shots involved. This theory only works if you bowled well to get them to 5 down. All they had to do was put away those **** shots for a little while and they were always going to be able to squeeze out another 150+ runs, unless England actually bowled better.

still can't believe the kallis dismissal
Yeah, that's a shocker. It wasn't a failure of the tech, it was the failure of the person, namely, Rod Tucker. The URDS means technology + people so any failure within the system should reflect on the whole system, despite some people saying it shouldn't.

Mind you, Kallis being suspect against the short stuff, even though it was pretty rancid short stuff, helpfully illustrates why good judges don't put him in the top echelon of the great modern batsmen.

Yeah, absolutely. We've had a situation here whereby we had the right decision originally and then over-turned it to get the wrong one. In the past we've had a few bad UDRS calls that didn't really cost us because they just upheld the umpire's decision, and the system is massively geared towards it for that very reason, but here we've had one that actually made a negative impact on the game. It's a big deal, whether it was directly the fault of technology or not. And I say that as a pretty big technology-in-umpiring fanboy.

Spot on.

Man it was a shocker. When a decision goes England's way and Botham and Holding are saying it's bad, you know it's at the top end of the scale for howlers.

Indeed. Same goes for Ricky Ponting I presume? And presumably Dravid can’t be in those top echelons as he had penchant for being bowled which illustrates fundamental technical deficiencies, Lara caught on the drive/move, unfortunately even great batsman have “samey” modes of dismissal. Makes it a weakness? I’m not sure; I’ve seen Kallis pull and hook his ways to hundreds, likewise Ponting.

No, a difficulty with the short ball denotes lack of courage and manliness. Flinching away at what should be fairly easily dealt with half trackers isn't a great sign.

This view point comes from being a child of the 70s and 80s I'm afraid :)

They have the "courage" to take it on, Steve Waugh didn’t.

Kallis was apparently vulnerable against the full ball, struggled against left armers and now can't short pitch bowling, how the **** this guy averages 57+ is beyond me.

I'm in London today, so getting up at an unholy hour to get to Lord's and see if they have any returns on the gate. Hope to god it isn't one of those Cook/Trott days.
