I don't think the issue is whether we have 3 or 4 seamers; the problem lies in having 3 seamers with Martin being one of them. Can't afford for the old warhorse to be holding back these youngsters anymore.

Four seamers plus Vettori version. Can drop one of the seamers for either another spinner (who exactly?) or a batsman (who if not Brownlee?). Tail also looks a lot stronger now.

Batting will rely on Guptill, McCullum, Taylor and Williamson scoring big runs, which is what they're supposed to do, FFS.

Tim Southee was in the middle of a very good spell without much luck. He had earlier induced an edge off Gayle which was dropped by Ross Taylor at slip. He later had Marlon Samuels edge towards second slip, where Brendon McCullum dived to his right to try and pluck it with his right hand. He quickly suggested that he wasn't sure if the catch was clean. Upon review, the ball had bounced. Such was Southee's luck on a day when he had bowled good enough to pick up a five-wicket haul.

Unluckiest bowler going around. Ends up with 2-70 to keep his haters happy. No doubt in a month or two this match will be forgotten and his performance will be deemed average bar an over or two.

Don't think there are many Southee haters on this forum - just people who are continually disappointed by his bowling (and batting) and didn't want to see him play in place of Boult and Wagner. Everyone knows Southee has masses of potential.

18 of those runs were Samuels smoking sixes at the end. Ideally he should've bowled the length Bracewell did.

He often bowls "well" by inducing the batsmen to play and miss, but he's no different to Hilfenhauss mk I, and then after his impressive spell he goes completely limp and is a passenger.

Haven't seen this innings yet so I'll hold fire, but I'd put money on it being the same old Southee story of look a million dollars yet achieve nothing.

I don't "not rate" Southee, but I definitely fall into the category Straw Man alluded to below. Until he follows this up, I can't be sure he's simply flattering to deceive again. Still gutless with the bat.

Yep, best performing seamer yet somehow never ending up with the figures he deserves. Not that he bowled poorly or anything but you'd never see Southee pick up three cheap wickets at the end like Bracewell did their, just wouldn't happen. Has absolutely zero luck old Timmy.

They, the wickets, might have come at low number of runs for bracewell - but for years we have struggled to get rid of the tail. If Bracewell knows how to do it - I wouldn't undermine this skill. I thought he bowled well to get rid of Samuels. If he had've pitched it up he could have gone for plenty.

Could've gone for plenty still if Samuels had placed that two metres either side of Wagner on the point boundary.

Yes, I did. The guy annoys the hell out of me as he clearly has the talent but hasn't shown enough application. Whilst Guptill and Williamson are slogging it out in county cricket, Southee might play a couple of 20:20 matches. I certainly wouldn't have picked him for this match, but I would love it if he fulfilled his talent.

There's no such thing as an unlucky bowler. A good bowler can have unlucky days, but if it persists then there's always a solid technical reason why.

He had two catches dropped off his bowling, so it was definitely an unlucky day for Southee.
