Didn't see the T20s but I think our batting will do a bit better in the ODIs - guys like Williamson, Brownlie and Flynn if he plays are more effective there. Suspect our bowling is going to get pummelled though - Gayle like this makes me think of us vs Sehwag in ODIs a few years ago. Southee century number 2?

Late on this, but Jacob Oram is basically dead weight to any NZ team, and how he got a contract (!) is beyond me. There are a plethora of young all rounders, around the country ticking the right boxes ala Jimmy Neesham etc that could easily gain valuable experience from being involved in an international squad, instead we have Oram who is injured more often that he plays.

As for Southee, as soon as they tried to turn up his pace and he lost his outswinger with the red ball sadly its been all down hill for him, also as someone who has played in the same team as him for an Auckland Secondary Schools XI, he needs to let go of that ego. I have no idea why NZ cricket continues on with this pace obsession, especially when they have seen Vernon Philander teach them a lesson in line and length.

Wouldnt read too much into these 20/20's because I didn't expect any other result tbh.

As for the batting, jesus, Guppy and Kane are gonna have to man up in the tests especially (even moreso if Taylor is injured) as they seem to be the only ones capable of constructing an innings, and thats being very generous to Guppy as he just cant help himself time and time again.

I have my opinions on McCullum, vastly overrated IMO, plays a devastating knock every now and again, reminds me of Mitchell Johnson's bowling, except McCullum will never be dropped which is also part of the problem. With that being said, they need him for the experience alone because I can imagine the strife NZ's batting line up could find themselves at the hands of Roach and Narine.

Gillespie added to NZ's casualty list - Cricket - Sportal New Zealand

Brilliant - that's all we needed.

So basically, it's either going to be Southee - who by dropping him, they admitted wasn't up to it at present - or (heaven forbid) Andrew Ellis. Or Brent Arnel.

Our ODI captain and best batsman is out, and despite being at home ready to board a plane soon they haven't called up McCullum. Probably because they don't want to make their resting policy look silly.

This is shaping up like being like the bad old days of touring the Windies, but the hospital visits are for injured bodies rather than broken jaws.

Yeah expected. Maybe 90% chance of being injured most of the season was a legitimate reason not to give Gillespie a contract. For tests if no Taylor:

Guptill
Flynn
McCullum
Williamson
Brownlie
Vettori
Van Wyk/Watling
Bracewell
Nethula
Boult/Wagner
Martin

looks pretty ugly without Taylor

Edit: I know I've advocated Vettori at 6 a lot in recent times though not actually opposed to playing more batsmen vs Windies - match should be more of an arm wrestle so extra batsman may come in handy. But with no Taylor or Ryder our extra batsman is who, Nicol?

Jesus, you Kiwis seem crazy brittle these days. Any ideas why all these injuries keep cropping up? It can't be schedule related, just freak accidents? Poor fitness?

Still believing indoor facilities are good for bowlers probably has a lot to do with it.

To hell with the extra batsman. They won't score any runs anyway. All out attack in the bowling imo.

Agreed. Having an extra batsman to be bamboozled by Narine won't help us.

I'd play Wagner - his ability to reverse it will give us an extra weapon mid-innings. And we know Vettori doesn't particularly provde that anymore.

Black Caps call in test specialists early | Stuff.co.nz

Makes sense to send McCullum early (ie now) but Martin and Wagner to play in the ODIs? Wagner's one-day numbers were terrible last season. And we all know Martin's days in coloured clothing are done - what's the point? He has a three-day match as a warm-up. Why not blood someone that performed solidly last season domestically, or go for someone who was picked in the SA series then dumped for no real reason (I'm not naming names for fear of bias). I dunno, maybe it's cost-cutting. Maybe it doesn't matter.

Agree not much point sending Wagner and Martin for ODIs. If anything I thought it helped in the SA series to have some test specialists arrive after we got beaten comprehensively in the limited over matches - adds some freshness. IIRC Boult is already over for the ODIs too.

Thought about it and realised that our extra test batting option would be to play both Watling and Van Wyk.

lol, we are a joke. Chris Martin, 37 soon to be 38 year old Chris Martin making a comeback to the one day team, what's the point? If the decrepit old **** can't handle a more than adequate lead up (at least he get's a warm up game) he should be put down. Shouldn't even be there to begin with anyway.

On green seamers.... He had that one good over against South Africa and then proceeded to send down rubbish you'd expect from a 37 year old fast bowler. Can't bat, can't field and is going to be a complete non factor on these pitches.

He was still the cream of our crop and second only to Bracewell overall, and Gillespie in the SA series.

And to cross over your cricsim argument to here somewhat, he outbowled the guy you're pumping to join the test squad quite comprehensively as well. Southee was appalling on those same green seamers.

Southee lost his consistent ability to bowl the outswinger that proved so dangerous, when he swings it he is a threat (just look at that spell with Bracewell in THAT Test again Aus). Once he lost that, hej ust went searching for wickets and continues to search for that swing and finds himself gettin punished with extremely inconsistent lines (bowls too straight looking for swing that simply, for one reason or another, isnt there). Any bowler who goes through form trouble knows this feeling, where the thing that works best for you doesn't work, you end up just trying everything without any thought process whatsoever, thats what Southee is going through now. It's why he can still at times get away with it at the limited over level because consistency and pressure are not at the forefront.
