***Official*** Australia in England 2012

I can't see Johnson getting the next game after his no-ball performance at The Oval. No-balls are just too expensive these days to risk him IMO. Maybe they'll drop Johnson and Doherty, and bring in Hilf and Pattinson. Spin / slow bowling options can be covered by Dussey and Clarke - who bowled as well or better than Doherty at The Oval.

I'd like to see Pattinson bowl, and I don't see the point of bringing him over here if he isn't going to get some game experience at some point.

I think England will probably win the next game too, regardless of which personnel Australia change.

Would that not weaken the batting & render the bowling more samey?

Regarding the batting, it shouldn't be the job of nos. 7,8 or 9 to make the runs. That's the job of the top 5 or 6 and if they fail then the bowlers shouldn't be expected to win the game.

Bowling wise, isn't Pattinson supposed to be lighning fast and accurate? Hifenhaus has aledgedly sharpened up his game too hasn't he, or is it all Aussie bluster?

Pattinson is very, very sharp - if he's fit (and that must be an issue given he's had 1 match in 6 months), early 90s is not an issue

He also moves it both ways and has an excellent action

However, accuracy is not his forte and nor it should be

In the first 2 tests against India, he beat up the likes of Sehwag, Dravid, Tendy and VVS rather than bored them into submission

IF he, Cummins and Starc (21, 6'6" left hander that swings it at high pace with a very nice action) stay fit and do justice to their potential, then the only question is whether our batsmen are good enough because 20 wickets per test will rarely be an issue

Hilfenhaus (and Siddle) has been a revelation since his return to the test team - improved pace, greater accuracy, more variation and any number of unplayable deliveries

Why he isnt the first guy chosen on this tour is simply a mystery but must have something to do with next year's Ashes or simply be a hangover from when he was crap at odis

I wouldn't go so far to say Pattinson is lightening fast and accurate. He has some good pace, for sure, but can still lose his radar a bit. Would definitely be bringing him in for Johnson though, even if just for the reason that he will be a key player for this team in the future and needs the experience. Can swing the ball consistently too which Johnson can't. Hilf has definitely improved (at least for the time being) in test cricket quite dramatically, but less so in the limited overs stuff imo. Better than he was before, and can bowl the occasional jaffa, but just still bowls too much dross in between. Would probably bowl better with the conditions in England, but on the whole I don't really know why he is part of the squad tbh...would much prefer to give a place to someone else.

Hilf has only played a few matches in ODIs since his "improvement" and kept taking wickets

Compare that to what e have today and who cares if he goes for 5 an over

Hilf hasn't been that good in ODIs imo. An improvement yes, but nothing like his test return. That's why he hasn't been a first choice pick.

Figures this year:

5/33
2/51
2/50
0/29
0/46
0/43
1/36
0/15

Average: 30.30, economy 4.93

Decent numbers, but not anything remotely special.

I'm not making my assessment of him just on his numbers this year either. I've seen every match he has played in, and I haven't been that impressed. Just still too much loose stuff for my liking.

The only reason Johnson is on this tour (and the A tour as well) is to give him cricket after nearly a year out

Makes no sense to sideline him because he bowled inconsistently for 7 overs

Woakes called up by England again for the next ODI. Meaker and Dernbach not available because of Maynard funeral. With Anderson still doubtful, it's likely to be one of Woakes or Patel to play at Birmingham. With the Weather and conditions as they are I'd imagine Woakes will get a go. Old Samit is not having a great time this summer really. Plenty of action over the winter for England but only the one T20 this summer so far.

Thank god - no more bits & pieces merchants please. If he wants to play, then he has to force his way into the side as a batsman.

Hope to god that even if Anderson's fit they play Woakes instead, batting and some time at the top level for the lad.

Anderson's already been injured once would rather not see him risked any further in this series.

This was the pinnacle of Hilf2.0 (done on extremely flat SCG wicket too)!!

So who would you play? I'm guessing you'd give Doherty the boot & make up some overs of spin from Clarke & Hussey, but what about the quicker stuff? Would you play Hilfenhaus & McKay?

I'd select

Warner
Watson
Wade
Clarke
Bailey
Hussey
Smith
Johnson
Pattinson
Hilfenhaus
McKay

4 main bowlers with 10 overs to come from Watson/Smith/Hussey/Clarke and Warner

No room for Brett Lee?

Surely you need his batting potential don't you? Can Pattinson really bat well in international conditions?

Johnson has a test hundred, Pattinson is potentially a pretty good batsman and Hilf has improved massively - overall the tail is stronger than the first 2 games

Bottom line is that Lee's record with the ball in England is worse than just about anywhere else and his recent resurrection with the bat doesnt make up for that

If I was going to pick him then I'd have to drop Johnson and I really cant see the point in that - the guy needs more cricket under his belt

I don't know, if Jimmy's fully fit and the groin strain wasn't that bad I'd play him, there's not exactly loads of cricket before SA so I'd like to see him bowling. Obviously if he's not 100%, sit him out.

Shame Meaker's not available because I'd have liked to have seen what he could have done against the Aussies. Watched him the other night and was bowling proper rapid and with that skiddy bowling style of his he'd offer something a bit different to the rest, got an excellent yorkers as well.
